Preparing for Your Persuasive Presentation: Tips for Success

Get ready for your upcoming persuasive oral presentation scheduled for February 10–14. With 11 weeks to prepare, there’s no need to panic! You’ll choose from six relevant issues: Carbon Tax, Euthanasia, Live Animal Exports, Obesity, Horse and Greyhound Racing, and the East-West Tollway Link. Remember, this is a persuasive presentation requiring strong arguments, an opposing viewpoint, and a rebuttal. Don't forget to engage your audience, maintain good body language, and ensure clarity in your delivery for a successful outcome!

  1. ORAL PRESENTATION This SAC will be completed in the second week of school (February 10 – 14)

  2. DO NOT START TO PANIC… YOU HAVE 11 WEEKS TO PREPARE FOR THIS SAC

  3. BE CONFIDENT! YOU HAVE THE EXPERIENCE!

  4. Issue selection You will have 6 choices to choose from for your presentation: Carbon tax Euthanasia Live animal exports Obesity Horse and greyhound racing East-West tollway link

  5. Guidelines for your presentation this is NOT an informative talk It is a persuasive presentation with a contention With supporting arguments An opposing argument and your rebuttal It is 5-7 minutes in length

  6. Guidelines continued Adopt a persona - introduce yourself (in character) and briefly outline your involvement/ interest in the issue Establish the context – give the background information that led up to this issue Clarify and identify your audience - what is their interest, why are they listening to you? Where are you and why? Why is your audience attending and listening to you?

  7. Think about: How you will engage your audience? How you will introduce your issue? What persuasive techniques you will use to influence/position/sway/ manipulate/ create an impact on your audience? How you will conclude? (Not with ‘that’s it, I’m done’!!!)

  8. Finally, think about: Your eye contact with your audience Your body language and posture Your voice projection – can your audience hear you clearly? Your pace – don’t ‘speed speak’ Your tone and tonal shifts Your fluency – Is your presentation grammatically correct? Does is flow smoothly?

  9. Now you are ready to deliver… … with confidence and success.
