  3. STARTER • Our ignorance of History makes us slander our own times- Gustave Flaubert • What do you think this quote means? • How do you think the study of History can help us correct this error?

  4. WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN? • Archaeology: This is the study of the past by excavation( digging up) and analysis(close examination of something in order to understand it) of material remains. • Evidence: Facts that show that something said or discovered is really true • Hypothesis: This is a statement which is not necessarily made about something which usually is tested to prove whether it’s true or not • Proof: The evidence which shows that something is true • Sources: These are things, sometimes people which survived from the past and tell us about the past e.g an old diary

  5. WHY DO WE STUDY HISTORY? There are many reasons why we study History. Some of these are listed below: • We study History to learn about who our ancestors were and how they lived. • We study History to learn about past people and events. • We study History to know about important people and the contributions to the development of the world. • The study of History makes us develop investigative minds i.e it encourages us to find out more about things. Historians are like detectives. • The study of History makes us appreciate the world we live in. • History helps us to know the mistakes people of the past make and prevents us from making the same mistakes. • The study of History promotes international understanding among people, races, cultures and religions. • The study of History helps us know what has happened in the past and helps us predict what may likely happen in the future.

  6. WHAT DO THESE PICTURES TELL YOU ABOUT WHY THE STUDY OF HISTORY IS IMPORTANT?

  7. THE ISRAELI-ARAB CONFLICT • One of the reasons we study History is to appreciate the world we live in. To help you understand the conflicts in the middle East, do the task below. • Go to www.arabisraeliconflict.info. Explain your answer. • From what you have learnt about evidence in the previous lesson, do you think, you can trust this information?( Think about if there is enough evidence to show that the information on the website is correct) Explain your answer. • This task is for discussion in our lesson in class. • Feel free to contact me on michellemoghware@yahoo.com( for submission or clarification • DUE: September 22nd, 2014
