Resume Do’s • Use high quality or resume paper • Standardpapersize8 ½ x 11 inches • Tailor your resume to the job • Contact information should be current • When using an objective do make sure it applies directly to the position • Only go back 10 years in your work history • List your GPA if it is 3.5or higher • Be consistent with your layout and composition • Be honest • Use bullet points • Use past tense for previous activities, experiences or acquired skills • Limit your resume to 1 page • Proofreadyour resume • Continuously updateyour resume

Resume Don’ts • Present your resume in a fancy binder or folder • List an unprofessional email • No“I” statements • Include the complete addresses of employers, or Supervisor names • Include salary information • Exaggerate • Include References or state references available upon request • Highlight problems • Include photographs • Disclose personal information: age, sex, religion • Use jargon or slang • Over explain things on your resume • Use contractions and conjunctions (but, yet, so)

Listing Your Education Example: EDUCATION Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology May 2015 University of La Verne, La Verne, CA General Rules • List only colleges or universities where you will receive or have received a degree/credential/certificate etc. • GPA should be at least a 3.0 if listed (3.5 Preferred)

  6. Use Action Words • Don’t simply list duties, or responsibilities. Create accomplishment based bullets • Use action words Think of … Action, Purpose, Result Examples: • Evaluateathletes' readiness to play, and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted. • Collaborate with physicians to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries • Instruct coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel, and community members in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.

  7. Formatting Your Resume • Most frequently used format is Chronological • Be Concise & Specific • Include Only Pertinent Information • Omit Personal Pronouns such as “I” & “We” • Use Action Words • Use .5” - 1” margins all around • Use the same font throughout the resume • All Margins Should Be Well Aligned • Use Caps OR Bold To Emphasis Categories or Headings- DO NOT OVER UTILIZE • Use 11 pt. or 12 pt. font

Award Winning Resume What makes an Award Winning Resume? • It is presented on nice, professional paper • It is well organized and put together • Easy to the eye, easy to read and follow • The information provided is easy to find, self- explanatory and without spelling errors • Gives a good summary of your experience • Dates follow in a reverse chronological order • Accomplishment statements are action oriented • Highlights your skills, strengths, interests, and talents

  9. 12 Common Resume Mistakes • Font is too small/too big or hard to read • Spelling mistakes • Repetitive words • Leaving out dates • Inconsistent layout of resume • Using someone else’s words • Only one version of a resume • No Cover Letter • Unprofessional email address • Cluttered information • Including personal Information • Using abbreviations or contractions
