  2. 0 Introduction • Aviation doesn’t receive as much air time as highways or transit • Aviation’s role and it’s beneficial impact on our State: economic engine and quality of life • 254 California public use airports --29 commercial service airports like SFO and LAX; --221 general aviation airports 2

  3. 0 Broad Economic Benefit • Aviation contributes nearly 9% of both total state employment and total state output • Aviation contributes 1.7 million jobs • Aviation’s $110.7 billion in output exceeds the Gross State Product of 23 of the 50 states 3

  4. 0 Air Cargo Benefit • California air cargo was valued at $173 billion in 2000 • The San Francisco Customs District reported the value of goods flown through their airports in 2003 at $79.6 billion • In 2003 the Los Angeles Customs District reported the value of goods flown through their airports was $235.0 billion 4

  5. 0 Benefits of Tourism • Aviation generated over $14.5 billion in tourist dollars to California in 2001 • California is the most visited state in the country—with 12% of the U.S. travel market • Nearly half of all domestic tourists visiting from outside California travel by air 5

  6. 0 Quality of Life Benefits • Average real personal per capita income is increased by over $2,000 due to aviation • Aviation saves lives via emergency response, medical and fire fighting services • Just-in-time and globalization needs have been met by manufacturers and other businesses through air transportation 6

  7. 0 Other Issues • Several Government agencies need aviation to accomplish their mission effectively and efficiently • Aircraft are used to locate and suppress fires, for search and rescue purposes, and for recreational activities • Incompatible land uses 7
