  1. AIRSPACE the present situation and a look into the future Fransois van Haaff EAS General Meeting CGN, 2006-03-26

  2. the near future • harmonisation below FL 195 (C, E, G) • transponders "where the carriage and operation of transponders is mandatory" • Mode S per 2008-03-31

  3. Mode S (monopulse) SSR antenna PSR antenna

  4. next …. • 8.33 kHz radio(possibly not for GND, TWR, APP, FIC, AFIS, ATIS) • transition to Cat. N, K and U • Cat. N and K with VFR Access Rules • ADS-B (complementary to surveillance)

  5. what do we want, really? • entry into K • detection by 'Big Iron' (ACAS, XPDR) • detection of other gliders (FLARM, ADS-B)

  6. What is needed for K? • R/T in CTR's • R/T "may be required at specific locations" in TMA's and airways/CTA's • XPDR • no R/T, clearance nor XPDR in airspace reservations, via specific arrangements with ATS or in corridors

  7. 8.33 kHz radio 10.900 assignments between 118 and 137 MHz 24 assignments per channel av. below FL 195 after 2009 Dittel FSG-90: EUR 3250 Filser ATR 833: EUR 1728 Dittel FSG-2T: EUR 1550 combination with ADS-B via VDL-4 possible the assignment of frequencies is a national affair!

  8. XPDR's for surveillance and ACAS Becker BXP 6401 (EUR 2550 approx.) Filser TRT 600 (EUR 2540 approx.) Garrecht VT-10 (EUR 2400 approx.) high power consumption! antenna mounting low power transponder?

  9. but …. • Mode S infrastructure far from complete • problems with Mode S transponders • 1090 MHz overload? • false ACAS alarms • there are no suitable transponders! • there is no operational concept for VFR

  10. ADS-B for 'surveillance' and tactical conflict resolution a/c data (e.g. GPS co-ordinates) broadcast links: 1090 ES, VDL-4, UAT

  11. Mode S with 1090 ES • Pro -- compatible with ACAS -- Annex 6, for mix ACAS traffic - other traffic • Con -- power consumption -- non-availability of suitable transponders -- cost

  12. ADS-B via VDL-4 • Pro -- proven concept (SE) -- combination with 8.33 radio exists -- one VHF antenna • Con -- not compatible with ACAS

  13. so…. • a delay of the introduction date of transponders is reasonable • the development of low power transponders (e.g. low power LAST) is urgent • OR: ADS-B via VDL-4, combined with 8.33 radio? • make Road Map

  14. to be discussed • previous pro's and con's • is adherence to ICAO Annex 6 necessary? • prices • deadlines and delivery times equipment • subsidies?

  15. LET'S DECIDE WHAT WE WANT
