  2. Define matter in your own words • Definition of matter: anything that has mass and takes up space. • Examples!!! Air, Plastic, Metal, Wood, Glass, Paper, Clothes, YOU!!!!

  3. Matter has different properties • Think about air and plastic. Compare and Contrast them. Solid More Dense Can see it Plasticy feel Can be shaped Etc. Gas Less dense Can’t see it or feel it Etc. Have mass and take up space; Made of molecules Have a density

  4. Properties or characteristics of matter • Matter can be hard or soft, rough or smooth, hot or cold, etc. • It can be a liquid, solid or gas • Flammable (catch fire easily); non-flammable • And many more…

  5. What do we call the study of the properties of matter? • Chemistry!!!!- The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.

  6. The properties of matter depend on it’s make-up (not the lipstick kind)

Matter can be substances or not • A substance is a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup (composition) and a specific set of properties. • Examples: Table salt- table salt will always be table salt no matter where you find it! • What would be another example? • What would be a non-example? Gold, table sugar, Iron, Helium, Oxygen Blueberry muffins- they contain flour, sugar, salt, blueberries. However, the makeup of the muffins might change depending on the recipe; so they are not a substance!!!!

Physical Properties • A physical property is a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance • Example: A physical property of water would be that it freezes at 0°C. Ice is still water (H20). You haven’t changed it into something else. • What would be another example of a physical property of water?

  10. Other physical properties • Solid, liquid or gas • Hardness • Texture • Color • Ability to dissolve in water • Sugar: • Iron: Yes! You can add it to sweeten your water No! That’s why you can use a spoon to stir the water

  11. Name some physical properties about the balloons • Gas • Name the colors (red, yellow, blue, etc., etc.) • Less dense then air • Rubbery • Smells like rubber • Light

  12. Physical Properties can be used to classify matter • How are metals classified? • Luster = metallic shine • Good conductors (heat and electricity) • Magnetic or not • Ductile/ Flexible or not (bend without breaking)

  13. Chemical Properties • Chemical property is a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. • In order to observe a chemical property, you have to try to turn it into something else (another substance).

  14. Examples of chemical properties • Chemical property of methane: will catch fire and when it burns, it combines with oxygen to form new substances, water and carbon dioxide. CO2 Methane

  15. Example of Chemical Properties: • Chemical property of iron: will combine with oxygen to form rust Oxygen Does gold rust? No! So that is a chemical property of gold!

  16. Bakers use chemical properties! • Bakers use yeast. Yeast feeds on the dough turning it into a gas. This causes the bread to rise. Gas (dough rising) Yeast Dough
