  5. Installation • After installation, restart the computer • Find EndNote program by clicking the Start menu • Start  All Programs • Click EndNote Program to launch EndNote • Open a blank Word document • Getting Started Guide is also downloaded with installation

  19. Adding a New Reference Manually • To add a new reference, go References>New References (ctrl-N) in Endnote • Or click on the New Reference icon

  20. Entering References Manually Start EndNote and open your library Click: References  New Reference Click:Reference Type menu and select the type of information you are entering. New Reference Window: Enter info where you want it. You don’t have to use every category. More than one author? give each a separate line in the Author Field. Remember that the Research NotesField can store up to 10 pages of your notes, or full text articles, quotations, etc. Add an Image in the Image Field .. one image per reference, however.

Enter author names correctly! • Each author's name must be added on a new line • Type in the first author : first name first (Tiberius Rex ) • and press enter/return • Type in the second author: surname first (Morre, Nicole) • Do not apply bold, italics, underlining, etc. • Press the TAB key to move between fields • All fields do not need to be completed • Close it out to save

Using EndNote and Word together • Insert references from your EndNote Library into a Word document. • Open EndNote • Open Word • Select: output style • Point the cursor where you want the in text reference to go • Click the EndNote toolbar in Word – Insert Citation • The Find & Insert My References dialog box appears • Select and click ‘Insert’ • By default, the citation was inserted into the Reference List at the end of the document

  29. 5. You will be returned to the Word document - the selected citation will be inserted, and a bibliography entry created. EndNote is software that will help you manage references collected during research. Citation formats (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) are included within the EndNote program. A literature search(Williams & Williams, 2006) is an information gathering process to find information for your research paper (an in-depth process for the dissertation literature search). EndNote and the literature search go hand in hand. In text citation –may need a bit of editing Reference List -- bibliography Williams, V., & Williams, B. (2006).   32. Bibliographies • Print a bibliography of selected references directly from EndNote • Send selected references from EndNote to a file to be opened as a bibliography in Word • Copy an annotated bibliography from EndNote and paste into a Word document

EndNote References into Word Exporting Bibliographies from EndNote • Open: EndNote library • Select: output style • Highlight: references to be exported to Word • From EndNote Click: File and then Click: Export • Save In: any folder you want • Name File: Add Rich Text File (RTF) as the filename extension (example filename: networking.rtf) • *.rtf files can be opened in Word • Open this file in Word

  35. Continued: Insert EndNote Bibliography into Word • Open new or existing Word document • Put cursor where you want bibliography • Select Importfrom Word toolbar  File • Select the *.rtf bibliography • Save as a *.doc file

Create an unlimited number of libraries No limit to the number of libraries that can be open at one time Unlimited number of references Each record can contain up to 53 fields (e.g., Author, Title, etc.), 8 of which are custom fields. 47 predefined reference types and 3 additional, unused references types Maximum of 5000 Groups (Custom, Smart, Composite) in a single library

  40. Library can be used at multiple computers Save your EndNote library to a USB memory stick Take this USB memory stick with you When at another computer that has EndNote installed, insert the memory stick and open your EndNote Library file which will automatically open EndNote on this computer

Move/copy a reference from one library to another • More than one library can be open at a time • Use the “Window” option from top toolbarto go from one library to another • Open the library with the citation to copy • Right click and select “copy” • Open library that needs the copied citation • Within the citations window, right click and select “paste” • The copied reference from library #1 was just pasted into the reference list of library #2 • Double-click on the reference to open the complete record for this citation
