INTEREST IN E-PORTFOLIOS IS MAGNIFIED: • New Provost hired Summer 2006 • Heightened interest in the academic use of technology • University System of New Hampshire holds e-portfolio forum November 2006 • Status reports given on e-portfolio adoption at each institution • Helen Barrett presents to provide context for e-portfolio usage

SUPPORT FOR E-PORTFOLIOS IS MAGNIFIED: • E-portfolio Planning Committee formed Spring 2007 • Curricular and co-curricular areas included • [Oversized] Charge developed • Included product review and selection, identification of cross-campus uses, template and rubric development, pedagogical strategies, policy creation, and e-portfolio pilot • Keene State College brings Helen Barrett to campus to present to its faculty and staff April 2007

  7. ACADEMIC TRAVELING TEAM FORMED • Planning Committee members invited to attend summer e-portfolio institute at Stanford University • Attendees: 2 Faculty, 2 Assistant Deans, College Web Master, Academic Technology Manager

  8. “So, what is it that you want out of this institute…?” • WHY: What is the motivation behind your interest in e-portfolios? • WHO and WHERE: Who do you envision using e-portfolios and at what stages are they in their development? • TOOLS: What tools and/or technologies are you considering? • BACKGROUND: What is your educational environment like? What is your frame of reference? • GOALS: What high priority tasks does your team expect to address during the institute?

  10. Lack of common understanding about e-portfolios BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR TRAVELING TEAM:

TEAM EPIPHANY – STANFORD UNIVERSITYE-PORTFOLIO INSTITUTE • Opportunity to hear what other institutions are doing with e-portfolios • Need, approach, challenges… • Institute encouraged participants to look at process, not focus on product • The result – team synergy, energy, and understanding around e-portfolios

UPON OUR RETURN… • Instructional Technology staff moved from IT Group to Academic Affairs • Product Decision Required within One Month of Our Return – became the focus of the committee • Approval through campus committees took another 2 months • Committee concerns focused on product • Results were little time spent on e-portfolio uses • Problematic given the expectation of an e-portfolio pilot during Spring 2008 semester

WHERE WE ARE NOW • Focus shifted away from Student Learning to Assessment • Committee charge initially unchanged • Assessment Needs: • New England Association Schools and Colleges (NEASC) visit Fall 2010 • Implementation of a new General Education program (renamed Integrative Studies) • Small e-portfolio pilot in Education dept. on-going • Long-term product solution yet to be determined • Possibility of having multiple products available based on need
