  1. Introduction to Color Design for Journalists Summer 2014

  2. RGB color • RGB is the light space that TV, scanners, digital cameras and computer monitors use to display color • Devices use a combination of Red, Green and Blue pixels to display all colors and images • 256 brightness levels (0-255) • 0 = black • 255 = white • 16+million color potentials • All images published on the web must be saved as RGB • Certain RGB colors cannot be replicated with CMYK

  3. CMYK color • CMYK is a color printing process used by commercial printers • The color image is divided into four components: Cyan, Magenta,Yellow and Black • Each color is printed separately. When combined, the four colors make a full-color image • Uses percentages to create colors • 100% = solid black • 0% = white • 1 million total color variants • RGB files need to be converted to CMYK before printing

  4. Color Qualities • Hue - The dominant color family • Saturation - The intensity of the hue • Brightness - The relative lightness or brightness of the hue

  5. Color wheel • In the RGB color wheel the primary colors are red, green and blue • These primary colors combine to create secondary colors, which are cyan, yellow and magenta • Secondary and primary colors are combined to make tertiary colors

  6. Analogous colors • Colors within 30 degrees of each other on the color wheel are called analogous colors • Harmonize easily • Lack strong contrast

  7. Analogous colors

  8. Monochromatic colors • Colors in the same hue but with variations of brightness or saturation • Balanced, harmonious, easy on the eyes • Lacks contrast

  9. Monochromatic Color

  10. Complementary Colors • Colors across from one another on the color wheel • Creates maximum contrast

  11. Complementary Colors

  12. Split Complementary Colors • Uses a color, and two complements to the sides of its direct opposite • Create strong contrast • More subtle than complementary color schemes

  13. Split Complementary Colors

  14. Warm vs. cool colors • As a group, reds and yellows are considered “warm” colors and blues “cool” colors. • But some reds are “cooler” and some blues are “warmer” than others.

  15. Warm colors vs. cool colors • Warm colors are vivid, bold and energetic • Warm colors tend to advance in space • If an element in your design needs to pop out, consider using warm colors

  16. Warm colors vs. cool colors • Soothing • Give a calm impression and rarely overpower the main message of a design • Tend to recede • If an element of your design needs to be in the background, give it cool tones

  17. The interaction of color • A theory stating our perception of colors change based on surrounding hues • Surrounding hues can create harmony, add contrast, or distract viewers from the color being surrounded • Choose carefully the colors you choose to surround your primary color
