  3. Lofty purpose, but he is inadequate • Believes he has more ability than he does • Object of pursuit may also be as absurd as he is • May be conscious of all this absurdity • Audience typically conscious of all Comic Individual

  4. Must follow moral rules of that which he peruses • Must follow rules of sanity • Needs restoration/punishment/resolution • No villains • No madmen Comic individual

  5. Comedy comes from senses or mind (imagination or understanding) • Situation vs. character • Situation: little to no freedom, seeks to overcome external factors • Character: self-determined, situation is a consequence, can find freedom • Control in character, none in situation Comic individual

  6. Mistaken identities • False identities • Disguises • Voluntary and Involuntary Comic individual

  7. Centered around an individual, creating a thread • Shakespeare has several threads • Action is the movement of these threads around each other • Collision of threads through action creates comedy Comic Action

  8. Surroundings • Jobs • Family • Friends • School • Church Comic Action

  9. Appearance dissolved, reality restored • Deception must be discovered • Source of mistakes uncovered • Responsibility assumed Solution

  10. System of punishments and rewards • Forced to see folly in the end • Plan break to pieces • Can’t be too serious • True love • Nature AND logic Solution
