  4. Elizabeth was under a lot of pressure from parliament to execute Mary. They believed she was dangerous. – they said as long as Mary was alive, plots against Elizabeth would go on. Elizabeth wasn’t so sure. Sort the following reasons into the table below to help her make up her mind. Start with the one you think is the most important. Mary said she knew nothing about plots against Elizabeth. Mary was Scottish so couldn’t be tried in an English court. Mary was a Queen – chosen by God. Elizabeth didn’t really believe Mary was plotting against her – she thought the evidence was forged. Mary was a Catholic queen who threatened the English church. As long as Mary was alive, plots against Elizabeth would continue. Mary had written letters to powerful people abroad. She asked for help to escape? Parliament wanted Mary to be executed In 1586, Elizabeth’s spies found evidence that Mary had been involved in plots Great concern about the reaction of powerful Catholic countries such as Spain if Mary was executed.

  5. Mary denied involvement in any Catholic plots. But to be on the safe side Elizabeth kept her imprisoned in castles around England for Eighteen years. Year after year Elizabeth’s advisor, Walsingham, claimed to have uncovered Catholic plots against Elizabeth. Walsingham was sure that Mary was involved in these plots but didn’t have any proof. Then in 1586, he got hold of a coded message written by Mary to a Catholic, called Anthony Babington, who was planning to kill Elizabeth. This evidence persuaded Elizabeth that she needed to do something about Mary. Mary was executed in 1587, at Fotheringay Castle. Why did Elizabeth execute Mary?
