  1. I’m bored…. What can I do to pass the time? I KNOW! Mess about with the Church and set fire to some Protestants! Now, why didn’t I think of that sooner? Queen Mary i

  2. How do you burn a Protestant to death? Mary I was a Catholic. She HATED Protestants, because they weren’t Catholic, and they ignored her instructions to become Catholics. So she burned Protestants to death – about 300 in total! First, the ‘evil’ Protestant would be chained to a stake (a bunch of several long bits of wood) that was buried in the earth. There would be a pile of wood and leaves around the stake. This pile would be set alight, and the fire would slowly creep up the body. It might take quite a while – 20 minutes or so? – for the victim to lose consciousness. Sometimes, relatives of the victim would rush towards them and try and tie a small bag of gunpowder around their necks. This would quicken death because as soon as the fire reached the gunpowder, it would explode. ACTIVITY Now draw a picture in your book to show how Protestants were burnt at the stake, and label itwith some key points from the text above to explain what is happening in your picture. Colour it in. Add the title at the top of this handout.
