  1. Gene Technology Student Expectation (SE) 6H - describehow techniques such as DNA fingerprinting, genetic modifications, and chromosomal analysisare used to study the genomes of organisms http://DNA Analysis Video/

  2. Genome The Human Genome • A genome is the entire “library” of genetic instructions that an organism inherits. • The human genome was completed in 2003 with new additions every year

  3. A. DNA Fingerprinting • used to analyze genomes for the purpose of human identification and how organisms relate to one another. • Restriction enzymes cut DNA at specified known segments and are separated through gel electrophoresis

  4. Genetic Marker • a child or offspring will have genetic markers that come from either the mother or the father.

  5. B. Chromosome painting • Radioactively labeled DNA canpinpoint a gene on a chromosome • DNA microarrays can be used in finding future cures to diseases and comparing different species

  6. C. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) • Have artificially acquired one or more genes from the same or different species. • Examples: GMO corn, soy, cotton, sugar cane, potatoes , +30,000 more!

  7. Plasmid • A circular DNA found in bacteria that can be inserted into other species to create recombinant DNA

  8. Restriction Enzymes • Restriction enzymes are used to cut DNA and insert DNA from another species

  9. D. Biotechnology • The use of living organisms or other biological systems in the manufacture of drugs and environmental management.
