The countdown to the HSA is on! Take out your three home assignments: Energy Use Review, Crossword, and Letter Home for checks. Utilize a numbered sheet 1-12 to practice HSA questions, skipping any BCRs. Remember, vitamins and minerals are essential for bodily functions and deficiencies can lead to disorders. Key minerals for health include Calcium, Iron, and Zinc, while Vitamins C, D, and K support immunity, bone health, and blood clotting. Feedback loops regulate biological systems, like insulin's role in glucose management.

6 days to the HSA!Do Now Take out all 3 home assignments so I can check them. (Energy use review, crossword, and letter home) Number a sheet of paper from 1 to 12 and begin working on the practice HSA questions. Skip any BCR questions.
Vitamins and Minerals • Vitamins and minerals are required by the human body (and other organisms) to function properly. • A vitamin or mineral deficiency can cause disease or other disorders.
Minerals • Minerals are INORGANIC substances an organism needs, for example: • Calcium for bone development • Iron for red blood cells • Zinc for DNA polymerase and other enzymes
Vitamins • Vitamins are ORGANIC compounds that your body needs to grow and function properly. • The HSA may ask questions about 3 of these vitamins, though there are MANY more… • Vitamin C helps your immune system fight infections. • Vitamin D is required for bone development • Vitamin K helps your blood to clot after an injury
Feedback • Feedback occurs in many biological systems, as well as lots of abiotic ones. • Feedback refers to a situation where related events have an effect on the future functioning of a system • An example…
Grades = Feedback. • How it’s supposed to work: Bob studies and does homework Bob takes a test Bob gets grades
Biological Feedback: insulin • Insulin is a hormone that causes cells in the body to absorb glucose in the blood and store it for later use. Bob’s liver absorbs blood glucose Bob overdoses on M&Ms Bob’s pancreas releases insulin
2009 HSA Question • This is an example of • Polarity B. feedback C. natural selection D. anaerobic respiration
Energy Use Review • Photosynthesis: MUST MEMORIZE! KEY CONCEPT!!! CO2 + H2O + Light energy C6H12O6 + O2 Happens in chloroplasts of plants. Light reactions capture light energy, store it in ATP Chlorophyll captures light Calvin Cycle builds carbohydrates from CO2.
Respiration makes ATP • Respiration breaks down chemicals to make ATP energy. • Aerobic = with oxygen, anaerobic = without oxygen • Mitochondria do aerobic respiration • Aerobic respiration = photosynthesis in reverse (energy out is ATP, not light) • ATP = cell energy
Practice Question Review (1-12) • #13 – 23 for homework (skip BCRs) • Begin studying!!! • Start with the review sheets we got already • Memorize 4 classes of macromolecules, their subunits, and functions • Memorize 3 vitamins from today • Memorize 7 cell parts and functions • QUIZ ON THESE 3 TOPICS TOMORROW!!!
