  1. Status and Achievements of the Project ACTIONS, DELIVERABLES AND MILESTONES with references to the project budget (internal re-allocation status and forecast of expenditure)

  2. ACTION 1. Project Management and Monitoring. The web-portal is the first result. It is continuously maintained (the English version). Also the Greek and Italian pages should be maintained. 4 REPORTS DELIVERED: inception report (30/06/2010), Progress report (30/06/2011), Mid-term report (31/12/2012), Progress report (30/06/2013). Thanks to the activities of coordination, reporting , control of timely delivery of the results and of costs eligibility, WE HAVE FINALLY OBTAINED THE 2° INSTALMENT!! but we are still missing to achieve concrete results in the Region of Peloponnese and we are missing many documents as listed in the EU communication of 13/09/2013. For the next report (May 2014) we would apreciate a greater collaboration of partners in fournishing the details of activities and results obatined. A suggestion is to promptly communicate to me and Costantini every single progress as soon as it is obtained. And continously send also the copies of administrative documentation. The 3 monthly implementation fiches, in fact, were produced just by the Region of Sicily. CRA-ABP coordinated the elaboration and the approval by all partners of the reallocation of funds. A request for the end date postponement of 1 year was request to the EU, and approved.

  3. ACTION 1. Project Management and Monitoring. 6 Steering Committee Meetings , 7 recommended letters, and numerous assiduous web-meetings, emails, telephone, and skype calls. During the Monitoring Face to Face SC Meeting held on 16-17/05/2012 the crucial issue was to finalize the soil surveying of the Region Peloponnese in order to apply the Risk Area Identification methodology , which was a prerequisite for the Region Peloponnese to elaborate the Soil Protection Measures Plan. Continous contacts were maintained by CRA-ABP with the Region of Sicily, and with the Prof. Kyriakopoulos of EKPA and with Mr. Galiotos of the Region Peloponnese (either directly and through Living Prospects) in order to check the progress of the activities of soil sampling, public survey (questionnaire), video documentary, the 3 annual conferences and the annual technical publications, and THE SOIL PROTECTION MEASURE PLAN, in the 2 regions. NOW THE CRUCIAL POINT IS TO OBTAIN CONCRETE RESULTS IN THE REGION OF PELOPONNESE

  4. ACTION 2. Soil Monitoring Software The first version of the SMS has been elaborated in collaboration between EKPA and CRA-ABP and is running on internet. A public tender, financed with own ordinary funds of CRA-ABP (not project funds)as published in order to select a company to improve the SMS which has been judged as missing of several functionalities. The company has been selected and has already start working. AS SOON AS WE WILL HAVE THE FIRST VERSION OF NEW SMS APPLICATION WE WILL INFORM AND SHOW IT TO THE PARTNERS

  5. ACTION 3 Implementation – Pilot Application of the SMS (SOIL MONITORING SOFTWARE) in two EU Regions: Sicily and Peloponnese – Identification of risk areas and targets for action 15/01/2013 final delivery of the soil database of Peloponnese by Agristudio. February 2013. CRA-ABP performed the quality control. March 2013. CRA-ABP identified the areas at risk of erosion by water applying the USLE model in the Peloponnese. THE RESULTING MAP OF AREAS AT RISK OF SOIL EROSION HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO THE REGION PELOPONNESE.

  6. Map exported from the SMS

  7. ACTION 4 Demonstration of the use of SOIL MONITORIG SOFTWARE & RISK AREA IDENTIFICATION to other Regional Authorities (RAS) The objective of this action is to present the project in public event, through web presentation, and through publication. The partners should participate to the DG Regio Open Days and Green Weeks all the years. Until now only CRA-ABP participated to DG Environment Green week lateral event held the 25th May 2012 at the University of Brescia. The lateral events are dislocated all over the European territory and any institution of LIFE project can propose and organise a lateral event. CRA-ABP presented the project also in other 7 international conferences. EKPA presented the project in one LIFE network meeting. The Region of Peloponnese published just on 1 papers and the same did EKPA. The Region of Peloponnese published on web. THE DEMONSTRATION ACTIVITY IS SCARCE AND SHOULD BE INCREASED.

  8. ACTION 5 Training to potential users The e-learning activity originally was in charge of EKPA, but after the reallocation of funds has passed in the hands of CRA-ABP. We were waiting for the second instalment to publish the tender for the e-learning activity. Now we can publish it. By the moment just 1 short video has been produced by CRA-ABP and published on the web-site regarding the use of the SMS. http://www.soilpro.eu/en/e-learning

  9. ACTION 6 Pilot Application of soil protection measures in two EU Regions: Sicily and Peloponnese Thanks to the end date postponement of 1 year the deadline has been postponed from 30/06/2012 to 30/06/2013 But for the Region Peloponnese we have missed to respect also this new deadline. THEREFORE THE EUROPEAN UNION IS ASKING US CONCRETE RESULTS IN THE REGION PELOPONNESE. Concrete results should be at list one soil protection measure approved, implementedand the results in terms of soil protection monitored. The question is: WHICH KIND OF SOIL PROTECTION MEASURE IS MOST SUITABLE FOR THE REGION PELOPONNESE? Maybe some measure related to reforestation of burned lands or maybe a measure to counteract the abandonment of olive cultivations, or maybe related to grazing? Is there any soil protection measure already implemented, either independently or even before the SOILPRO project? SOIL PROTECTION CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN MANY DIFFERENT AREAS, THEREFORE WE ARE OPEN TO FIND THE MOST SUITABLE FOR THE REGION PELOPONNESE PERSONNEL.

  10. Action 6: the results in Sicily

  11. ACTION 7 Monitoring the effectiveness of soil protection measures The aim of the soil monitoring is to estimate the effect on soil conditions after the application of soil protection measures in order to find the best practices, predict the soil conditions and quantitatively estimate the benefits in the case that other farmers will apply those practices. Samples of soil are necessary to be gathered. Monitoring sampling trip in the Region of Sicily March 2013 A second monitoring trip in Sicily is already planed for October 2013

  12. MONITORING:

  13. MONITORING: Economical impact Questionnaire on the advantages and disadvantages on the adoption of soil protection measures Management impact Social impact Environmental impact Learning from errors

  14. ACTION 7 Monitoring the effectiveness of soil protection measures Once we will know the exact location of the soil protection measures applied in the Region of Peloponnese we should rapidly organise also the monitoring activity. The external assistance for soil monitoring in the Region Peloponnese is in charge of EKPA. NOTE THAT THE SOIL SURVEY DONE WAS NOT A MONITORING ACITVITY, IT WAS JUST A STATE OF THE ART. For the monitoring activity we CRA-ABPcan also give its own collaboration, valorizing in that way the experience done in Sicily. Also the satellite images adquiered by EKPA should be valorised in the monitoring activity. Their cost should be justify to the EU, which is asking which concrete result s have been obtained, useful for the project implementation. Therefore the question again is: WHICH KIND OF SOIL PROTECTION MEASURE IS MOST SUITABLE FOR THE REGION PELOPONNESE? Maybe some measure related to reforestation of burned lands?

  15. ACTION 8 Awareness campaign against soil degradation process targeting soil users and all stakeholders – outreach Theaim of the awereness campaign isto create a positive local environment regarding the effort to combat the soil degradation causes to improve the public attitude and behaviour concerning soil management in all EU Regions… starting from Sicily and Peloponnese. SOIL DEGRADATION IS A HUGE PROBLEM IN PELOPONNESE. The importance of air or water is widely known. This is not the case of soils, whose importance is not widely known, although it’s conservation is crucial also for water and air, conservation. The functions of soils (as listed by ISRIC, WORLD SOIL INFORMATION) Food and other biomass production Environmental Interaction: storage, filtering, and transformation Biological habitat and gene pool Source of raw materials Physical and cultural heritage Platform for man-made structures: buildings, highways

  16. ACTION 8 Awareness campaign against soil degradation process targeting soil users and all stakeholders – outreach 02/12/2011 CONFERENCE ON SOIL PROTECTION IN SICILIAN VINEYARDS

  17. ACTION 8 Awareness campaign against soil degradation process targeting soil users and all stakeholders – outreach 17/12/2012 CONFERENCE ON SOIL PROTECTION EQUILIBRIUM WITH AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION … it was proposed by Dario Cartabellotta the label BORN IN SICILY…

  18. ACTION 8Awareness campaign against soil degradation process targeting soil users and all stakeholders – outreach We miss to organise REGIONAL CONFERENCES IN THE REGION OF PELOPONNESE.in the year 2012… we are currently expecting the organization of the REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF YEAR 2013. The annual the technical publications and videos are still missing either for the Region of Sicily and the Region of Peloponnese. Although some scientific article has been produce by CRA-ABP and already sent to journal to be review, and so these can considered to some extent technical publication of the project. BUT THE IMPACT OF SCIENTIFIC PUBBLICATION IS JUST INSIDE THE ACADEMICALS. WE NEED, INSTEAD TO HAVE AN IMPACT OF THE GENERAL AUDIENCE AND ESPECIALLY ON THE STAKEHOLDERS TO WHICH THE TECHNICAL PUBBLICATION AND THE VIDEO SHOULD BE TARGETTED.

  19. Budget to be spent (after the reallocation) by EKPA and RoP EKPA Region of Peloponnese

  20. We will not receive the 3° installment if we will not cumply the requests of the EU • CONCRETE RESULTS FROM THE REGION PELOPONNESE • AND • EXPLAINATION OF THE ROLE OF MR. GALIOTOS • JUSTIFICATION OF THE VERY HIGH INCREASE OF HOURLY RATE OF PERSONNEL RESPECT TO THE BUDGET • THE SELECTION PROCEDURE OF MINIMAL AND AGRISTUDIO BY EKPA • EXPLAINATION OF THE LOW NUMBER OF WORKING HOURS FOR THE FULL-TIME OF EKPA PERSONNEL • SELECTION PROCEDURE FOLLOWED FOR TOTAL VIEW INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR SATELLITE IMAGES AND AEGIS FOR MAP SERVER SOFTWARE BY EKPA
