In CEE 371, join Professor John Abel and TA John Brigham in exploring the foundations of structural engineering. This course covers essential knowledge and skills for designing structures that meet feasibility, serviceability, safety, and aesthetic goals. Learn about the structural design process, from conception to performance evaluation, and how to effectively analyze loads and assess structural integrity. Engage with real-world applications and enhance your understanding of man-made systems that must accurately transmit and survive loads to function successfully.

CEE 371 – Modeling of Structural Systems Professor John Abel TA John Brigham
Structure = man-made object which must transmit or survive loads to perform a desired function
Structural engineering = the accumulation of knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to design structures that fulfill 4 main objectives: • Feasibility - can be built and are economical • Serviceability - can perform desired function • Safety - risk of life and economic loss are acceptably low • Aesthetics - most structures are an enduring part of environment [Note the emphasis on design.]
The Structural Design Process • Conception • Loads analysis • Structural analysis • Strength analysis/Detailed design • Implementation/Construction • Evaluation of performance
