  2. The New Kingdom • Ahmose founds new line of pharaohs • Egypt becomes richer and cities grow • Most pharaohs not content to remain in Nile Valley • Marched enemies east • Empire founded • Thutmose III extends empire to Syria & Palestine

  3. The New Kingdom • Hatshepsut not interested in conquest • Chief interests-trade and building temples • Egyptian traders sailed to Punt -Traded beads and tools for weapons -Egyptians welcomed new items

  4. Religion • Began to worship a new god • Amon-god of Thebes • Re- sun god • Amon-Re became most powerful god

  5. Religion • Temples to honor Amon-Re • Houses of worship • Industrial centers • Gave work to scholars and artisans

  6. Religion • Temples also schools • Trained boys as scribes • Right to be scribe passed from father to son

  13. RELIGION • OLD – Polytheism – River and sun gods important, heavy emphasis on afterlife • NEW – worship of a new god Amon – Re (monotheism) built temples to honor him

  14. IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS • OLD – pyramids, irrigation system, granaries • MIDDLE – trade beyond Nile Valley, Ahmose uprising drove out Hyksos • NEW – temples, hieroglyphics, empire
