  1. Anthropic Principle & Aesthetic Principle Separate your page into 3 (Connell Notes) After taking notes. Draw something that will help you to remember it!

  2. Tennant & The Anthropic Principle • He was the first to coin the phrase • The universe seems so structured that it is inevitable that life will begin. • There are a large number of coincidences; gravity, gasses in the atmosphere, etc. If these were not present. We would not be here. • For Tennant, and others, the fact that we are here against the odds is evidence of the existence of a God. How far do you agree with Tennant?

  3. Paul Davies • If the relative strengths of nuclear and electromagnetic forces were even slightly different, carbon atoms could not exist. Then life would not exist. Roger Penrose • The statistical improbability of the fine-tuning for the existence of the universe is 10,000,000,000 x 123

  4. The Weak Anthropic Principle • We are here. Therefore, the universe must have all the properties and coincidences necessary for us to exist.

  5. The Strong Anthropic Principle • It is NECESSARY for the universe to have these special properties and coincidences. They do not happen by chance. The Universe was constructed. For Tennant the constructor of the universe is GOD.

  6. Criticisms • Some people believe that the weak anthropic principle doesn’t tell us anything at all. It is simply a TAUTOLOGY (saying the same thing over, just using two different words).

  7. Stephen Hawking http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/stephen-hawkings-universe-lifes-improbability.htm • There could be infinite number of universes existing. We happen to live in one that is suited to life. Given the sheer number of options, it had to happen somewhere!

  8. Many people would argue that it is illogical to argue that the universe is ‘anthropicallysuited’. IF it were not suitable for human beings, it would be suitable for something else.

  9. Aesthetic Principle (Tennant)

  10. Tennant • Argues that beauty is not necessary for survival of the fittest. It cannot be explained away by Darwinist ideas. • It is ‘a biologically superfluous accompaniment of the cosmic process.’ • Beauty does not perform any utilitarian function, so there is no reason for it. • It must have been put there by GOD

  11. Plenary: Just using your bullet point notes (ie cover everything else). Complete the box at the bottom, restating everything you have learned.
