Main Goals • Reduce manufacturing defects by using quantitative techniques • Reducing defects to six standard deviations (sigma) within a normal distribution curve or  3.4 defects per million • Eliminate variability and defects thereby increasing profits and customer satisfaction using verifiable data

  3. Motivation • High defect rates • Customer dissatisfaction • Reduce costs of scrap (waste) • Increase profit

  4. Who’s started it? When? • Created by Bill Smith at Motorola • 1986

  5. Who uses it? • Focuses on manufacturing defects, not as prevalent in software development • SoftServe, Inc study shows 25% of those surveyed using in some manner relating to their software processes • General Electric – claimed savings of $2Billion in 1999 • Dow Chemical – six projects that save half a million each, each year

  6. Unique Features • Places great importance on achieving measurable and quantifiable financial results  • Strong emphasis on making decisions based actual data rather than supposition or feeling • Small teams of experts within the organization that are responsible for its implementation and maintenance • Black Belts • Green Belts • No standard certification body - Self motivated

Comparison with other approaches • Six Sigma is a business approach to improvements and focuses on 'how‘ • statistical quality control • business cases • customer feedback • An approach such as CMMI is a standardization and models approach and focuses on "what“ • Policies • Procedures • key process areas • CMMI or ISO 9001 primary goals are to improve software development teams , manage the cost and reduce the production time , but Six Sigma in addition to those goals mainly focuses on business objectives , such as software maintenance, customer service and customer satisfaction

  8. Opinion • Because one of Six Sigma’s main components is constant measurements, those improvements can be easily proved • In software engineering it seems there is more work to be done to fit the Six Sigma methodology to software projects
