  1. Social Distancing isn't a New Concept for Smokers Ever since COVID-19 came into our lexicon and everyday lives, there have been a number of dos and don’ts issued almost on a regular basis. Some of them like washing our hands on a regular basis, wearing masks in public places and social distancing have become a part and parcel of living in 2020. However, there have also been some smear campaigns against smokers, as if they are the sole reason for the spread of this virus! There have been unverified reports of smokers being more susceptible to acquiring COVID-19, and this has been widely circulated through the power of social media. But the crux of the matter is, COVID-19 does not spare anyone. Old/young, rich/poor, smoker/non-smoker, everyone is susceptible to contracting the disease. These unjustified remarks against smokers is just another way of victimizing smokers for all of the world’s perils. Smokers in India have already been practicing a form of social distancing in public areas like restaurants, pubs and clubs. They are used to being sequestered in smoking-zones just to appease the general public, and hence can adhere to COVID-19’s social distancing norms quite easily. On the other hand, smokers must ensure that they maintain a safe distance during these times, and also keep in mind that sharing a cigarette is a complete no-no. Also, one must preferably try buying a whole pack of cigarettes rather than loose ones, to minimize any human touch. Let’s all stay united and fight this virus together, rather than singling out certain groups of individuals for their preferences.
