Abolitionist: William Lloyd Garrison • Gave speeches & published written materials • Said slavery was sinful • Blacks and whites supported him • Helped found the American Anti-Slavery Society – goal was to end slavery • 1831: first issue of The Liberator was published • Anti-slavery newspaper in Boston • Demanded that all slaves be freed immediately

Abolitionist: Frederick Douglass • Former slave • Traveled around the nation giving speeches about ending slavery • Autobiography sold many copies and described slavery • Joined the AASS as a lecturer on slavery • Published The North Star – an anti-slavery newsletter • Served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War • Fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks

Abolitionists: The Grimke Sisters • Grew up on a plantation with slaves • Attended meetings, raised money, signed petitions • Angelina and Sarah Grimke were some of the few, brave women who spoke publicly • Constantly shunned and scolded by the church and prominent citizens • Also very involved in the Women’s Movement.
