Ion Cyclotron Waves in the Inner Heliosphere: Generation and Characteristics

This study explores the extensive detection of strong narrow-band ion cyclotron waves (ICWs) in the solar wind at distances of 0.3, 0.7, and 1 AU, far from planetary influences. The waves are primarily left-hand polarized in the plasma frame but show variability in polarization in the spacecraft frame, indicating possible perpendicular pickup generation. Observations suggest lower power and occurrence rates of right-hand waves and a decrease in wave power with increasing heliocentric distance, supporting an inward generation and outward transport model. Optimal detection occurs at small B-R angles.
