  1. Good Afternoon Turn in HW: Batesian Mimicry Discuss Questions Take out a pen & paper and lets learn some evolution!

  2. From one generation to the next, the struggle for resources will favor individuals with some variations over others and thereby change the frequency of traits within the population.  This process is natural selection.  The traits that confer an advantage to those individuals who leave more offspring are called adaptations.

  3. How did these adaptations come to be?

  4. Evolution!

  5. Goals • Describe the process of evolution using: Variation, Population, Differential reproductive success, Inheritance, Adaptations

  6. Evolution main ideas • Within every population there are numerous variations • Organisms do not live forever, and some do not live to reproduce • The variants that already had “helpful” mutationswill more likely survive and reproduce compared to variants without these mutations (Differential Reproductive success [DRS]) • These favorable mutations are passed on to subsequent generations

  7. Variation

  8. What is the source of the variation?

  9. DRS due to favorable traits

  10. Favorable traits get passed on to offspring

  11. Within a population of moths, there was variation (light and dark). While the trees were lighter, the light moths DRS was greater. After the trees darkened, the dark moths DRS became greater. The color of moth gene is inheritable and passed on. Favorable, inherited traits, like the dark color, are adaptations.
