Next stepsUse this year to identify your priorities and prepare staff for the introduction Questions to consider: • What is the school already doing well? • Is there a positive school climate to enhance the impact of SEAL? Would pupils/ parents agree? • Are there existing curriculum opportunities to explore SEAL? Can these be enhanced? Are there clear gaps in provision? • What is the prior experience of pupils? Are there links with the Primary Hub? • Do staff have the capacity to develop SEAL? Are some areas better served than others? Can we create extra capacity? • How can this be introduced to staff to ensure a shared vision? Is a working group needed? • What may be the staff development needs? (Staff development guidance 3.4, activity 3.4.3, Guidance booklet section 4, Professional Development) • What meeting time/ INSET time is available for the development of SEAL? • How might this impact upon transition work?

Resources to support implementation planning • B and A in depth audit- Curriculum • What opportunities to teach behaviour skills exist already? • Core Day 4: Developing EHWB • SEAL guidance documents • Is the school climate ready for SEAL? Consider the learning andsocial climate and the physical environment (pg 23 Guidance booklet, 3.2.1 & 3.2.2. staff development activities) • How are parents made to feel welcome? (Staff development activity 3.6.3) • Audit tool in the SEAL booklet (Tools for profiling, monitoring and evaluation (3.9 appendix 2) pg 9, pages 14- 23) • Pupil rating scales for the SEAL domains (Monitoring and evaluation booklet) • Assessing the starting points (SEAL Resources 3.8.1- 3.8.6 in the Implementation area of the CD)

  3. Existing Resources • Pupil questionnaires on attitudes, experiences and bullying may help to identify pupil feelings on the school ethos • Incident logs may identify common behaviour problems and therefore skills needing to be addressed

  4. Activity As a group consider : • What preparation needs to be undertaken this year 2. What steps are needed to be taken/ information needed to be gathered to identify your implementation model and main priorities: • Which of the audit tools would be the most useful? (refer to appendix 3, activities 3.2.2 & 3.6.3 and the document ‘Auditing a school’ in the pack) • How might these be used with staff? (Random selection, all staff etc) • Is there a need to involve pupils and parents in the audit process? If so how can this be done? • What are the key decisions to be made and the key actions needed to prepare for the implementation?

Timeline for SEAL implementation 2007/ 08 • Identify the priorities and model of implementation for the school • Involve your Educational Psychologist in this process • Consider staff development needs and staff readiness for the SEAL concepts • Identify Primary experiences • Build SEAL into transition work • Trial strategies with a small pupil cohort • Support will be available via network meetings and a SEAL celebration day towards the end of the year 2008/09 • Wider roll out • Support available from Link SEAL schools • Continued network opportunities
