  1. Lying Prophets • Jeroboam’s False Religion (1 Kings 12) • Criticize original: • Too much to go to Jerusalem (v. 28) • Too restrictive, legalistic • Convenient: • 2 places to worship – Dan & Bethel (v. 29) • Closer to home – a religion that caters to the people • Like the original: • Had object to worship – Calf (could see, v. 28) • Had priests – any tribe (v. 31) • Had altars – the high places (v. 31) • Had special times to worship – feast days (v. 32)

  2. Lying Prophets • God sent vivid condemnation (1 Kings 13) • Gave specific instructions to young prophet 8 But the man of God said to the king, "If you were to give me half your house, I would not go in with you; nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place. 9 "For so it was commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.'" • Old prophet came and invited him back. • He repeated God’s clear instructions! • Old prophet lied – an angel spoke to me…

  3. Lying Prophets • Old prophet lied – an angel spoke to me… (13:18) • No one had spoken to him. • He didn’t believe what God told the young prophet. • That’s what false teachers do—they lie! • If they lie about doctrine, they’ll lie about other things. • Why did people follow lying prophets? • It’s easier, no sacrifice required, no effort needed. • Told them what they wanted to hear. • Golden calf doesn’t tell you anything, you tell it. • Tradition.

  4. Lying Prophets • Modern day examples: • Joseph Smith claimed angel Moroni spoke with him (Gal. 1:6-9). • Oral Roberts followed Smith’s example, but instead of angel— 900’ tall Jesus. http://www.tulsaworld.com/archives/oral-roberts-tells-of-talking-to--foot-jesus/article_bbe49a4e-e441-5424-8fcf-1d49ede6318c.html • Mary Baker Eddy – caught up to heaven—claimed to be guided spiritually to write her book on health and healing. • Pope claims to be Christ’s spokesman. • None of their claims are confirmed (2 Cor. 12:12). Galatians 1 6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! 2 Corinthians 12 12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.

  5. Obey Truth • Work of the Church • Preach Gospel (Mk. 16:15) • Edify Members (Esp. 4:12) • Help Needy Saints (Acts 6:1-7) • Plan of Salvation • Hear (Rom. 10:17) • Believe (Jn. 8:24) • Repent (Lk. 13:3) • Confess (Rom. 10:9-10) • Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16) • Worship • Sing (1 Cor. 14:15) • Pray (Acts 2:42) • Give (1 Cor. 16:1-2) • Partake of Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:23-25; Acts 20:7) • Preach Gospel (Acts 2:42; 20:7)
