  3. 2019 GCSE Results Press Release EPHS staff and students are celebrating yet another set of outstanding GCSE results with 75% of students gaining grades 9-4 in English and Maths and 55% achieving grades 9-5. - we are thrilled to have achieved yet another set of outstanding results in the year that virtually all GCSEs have converted to the more challenging 9-1 grading system. An incredible 109 grade 9s or A*s were achieved overall.

  26. GCSE English • All students are entered for both English Language and English Literature GCSEs. • There are no longer ‘foundation’ and ‘higher’ tiers in English. All students will sit the same exams at the end of year 11. • Students will be graded from 9-1 in each subject. • There are no longer any controlled assessments in English. • The course is examined entirely through examination at the end of year 11.

  28. Top Revision Tips for English Literature • Teach parents the poems • Your child could teach you a poem a week. • Ask them to teach you: • The themes of the poem • Explain to you the writer’s use of language and imagery • Explain to you how structure supports the ideas of the poem

The unseen extracts used for this exam are taken in part from contemporary journalism. • Read non-fiction (either online or paper) taken from quality broadsheet newspapers and identify: • Author’s viewpoint • Purpose of the text • Techniques deployed to achieve their purpose

Effective Revision Strategies The six strategies for effective learning are: • Retrieval Practice • Dual Coding • Concrete Examples • Elaboration • Interleaving • Spaced Practice At Key Stage 4, there are three Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs): • Year 10 – May • Year 11 – November • Year 11 – March Prepared: Year 11 Expectations Day and Year 10 GCSE Champion Day

Wellbeing SESSION - top tips • Exercise - your body releases different chemicals into your brain which are your body’s natural happy chemicals and they help to raise your mood. • Food - different foods can affect your mood in different ways, therefore, eating regular healthy meals can aid mental health. • Talking - importance of talking about your feelings to a friend, family member or professional is a good form of release and the understanding of someone else can be a great support. • Relaxation - the importance to take time for yourself to giving your body and mind a chance to slow down, relax and have the space to tackle the challenges ahead. • Laughter and Fun - lowers certain stress and anxiety hormones in the brain and even calms and relaxes the brain in the process. • Support - if you are worried, don’t be afraid to speak to your friends, family or teachers at school - there is someone out there willing and waiting to help you.

  44. Lunchtime and after school support All departments have organised intervention sessions at lunchtime and after school for Year 11 students. Please encourage your child to attend these subject support, revision and catch up sessions to help with preparation towards their GCSEs. If your child needs to attend a targeted session (indicated on the programme with an asterisk*), you will be sent an email or letter by the Head of Department.

  45. - what is it? SENECA is a revision and homework platform making studying more fun. Seneca is an interactive way to learn official course content. Their web app covers all exam board specific courses condensing what students need to know for their exams. The software is able to identify gaps in learning too. For instance, when you get a question wrong, the platform will repeat the topic in different format and their smart algorithm has proven to make students remember topics 2 x faster . All students, parents and teachers have free access to SENECA.
