If Howard University had been ascertaining the hall’s policies about African American performers, it would have learned that the site had a white performers only policy. • How was Mr. Boghetti ascertaining whether or not to take Marian on as a student? • When might ascertaining a policy in advance be helpful?

What supporting information does the photograph give you about him? • What facts about the concert and speech let you know that they are important historical events? • Was including these excerpts from Dr. King’s speech in this article effective? Explain. • Compare and Contrast • When Marian Sang and The Lincoln Memorial. • Use the selections to write vivid descriptions about her performance at the Lincoln Memorial that come from each of the selections and from both. • How do the two genres describe the same event?
