  2. Spiral of Silence Theory A person is less likely to let their voice be heard if it is not that of the dominant public opinion (Anderson, 1996). EXAMPLE Although Christopher Columbus knew the world was round, it was not the popular view at the time, and (for a while) suppressed Columbus’ statements – rendering him “silent”.

  3. Uses and gratification theory People use the media for varying reasons, whether it be information, entertainment, etc. It assumes that people are not passive with media but rather they integrate it to their own lives the way they wish (Katz, 1987). They seek to gratify a need. EXAMPLE Some people watch the news to stay informed but many enjoy it for entertainment purposes (Jon Stewart Show) because they choose to be entertained rather than informed.

  4. ROCKY IV SUMMARY • Apollo Creed, friend of Rocky Balboa, learns that the Russian boxer Ivan Drago is coming to America and decides to fight him. Drago delivers a severe punch to Creed’s head, killing him. Rocky decides that he must avenge Creed’s death by defeating Drago. • After many rounds of taking hits, Rocky finally produces good punches and defeats Drago and delivers a moral defeat to the USSR.

  5. Main Characters • Rocky Balboa – Bronx boxer who climbed through the ranks. • Apollo Creed – Boxer that brought Rocky into a higher circuit of boxing through an invitation to fight. • Ivan Drago – Famed Soviet boxer who has killed opponents in the past. • Adrian Balboa – Rocky’s current wife/former girlfriend.

  6. Spiral of Silence Theory in Rocky IV • The American spectators silence during the USSR ceremony • The hesitation of the crowd to cheer for Rocky • Adrian’s silence while Rocky prepares for Ivan

  7. Uses and Gratification Theory in Rocky IV • People choose to watch the boxing matches (TV & radio) to gratify their entertainment needs. • Rocky watches film of Ivan to prepare – gratifying his need to be ready.
