  3. Immediate acceptanceof the BA/MA-System • Problem: Fearofnotbeing competitive withotherItalianuniversities and seeing a fall in the numberofstudents • Consequence: toolarge a numberofcoursesnotallofwhich are sustainableasmanyof the teaching staff are shortlytoretirewithoutreplacement.

  4. Now: Teachingprogrammesprovidingstudentswith a verysolidbasiceducation in fundamentalsubjects • PhilosophyofUniTS: • young people needboth a verysolideducation in fundamentalsubjectscharacteristicofeverystudycourse and • work experienceduring the periodofstudy

  5. 9 yearsafter the introductionof the universityreform in Italy Alma Laurea (meeting pointforgraduates, universities and the business world) stressesthat: • 1.students achievetheirdegreesearlier • 2. the numberofgraduateshasincreasedfourfold • 3. studentsattendlessons more regularly • 4. the threefoldincreaseof work experiencehassignificantlyimproved the relationshipbetweenstudents and the job market.

UniTS • Achievementof BA Degreeswith 25.5 (nationalaverage: 26.2) • Lengthofstudies: 3.9 (nationalaverage 4.5%) • Employment rate with BA Degrees: 48.5% (after 1 year) (nationalaverage :48.7) 36% of BA Graduatesneither work norseek work (nationalaverage: 37.6) • 32.3 out of 36% are attending a universitycourse (MA-Degree).

MA Graduates • MA Degree at 27.1 (nationalaverage: 27.3) • Lengthofstudies: 2.6 (nationalaverage: 2.7) • Employment rate afteroneyearis 53.8% (National average: 55.9) • 24.9% neither work norseek work (nationalaverage: 17.8) • 19.4 out of 24.9% are attending a furtheruniversityspecialistcourse (nationalaverage: 12.7)

  8. Unemployment rate of MA graduatesofUniTS: 13.2% (nationalaverage: 17.1%) • MA graduates, therefore, pursuetheirdoctoralstudies or otherspecialistcourses (e.g. at the Facultyof Medicine).

  9. International StudentMobility • BA Degree: • 15% havehad a periodofstudyabroad (nationalaverage 10.6%) • 7% out of 15% withanErasmusprogramme • MA Degree: • 23% havehad a periodofstudyabroad • 12.5% out of 23% withanErasmusprogramme

Joint and doubledegrees • TRIESTE (SSLMIT) / REGENSBURG (PhilosophischeFakultät IV)- Studi Italo Tedeschi - Deutsch-ItalienischeStudien – BA Degree (started in 2005). • TRIESTE (FacultyofNatural Science) / PARIGI (ParisDiderote Paris Descartes) – FunctionalGenomics – MA Degree (started in 2007) • TRIESTE / LJUBLJANA – BA Degree in Mathematics (startedthisacademicyear).

IncreasingnumberofincomingErasmus and International students: 286 (86 in 2000) togetherwith a high numberofforeignstudentsenrolled at UniTS. • Enrolledstudentscomingfromabroad: 1.731 (392 fromEu-States and 1339 from non EU-States) • PercentagewiseUniTSis the first ItalianUniversityas far as the numberofforeignstudentsisconcerned.

Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences • - Second Level Degree in Physics - international curriculum in collaboration with ICTP • - Second Level Degree in Functional Genomics – international curriculum in collaboration (Double Diploma) with the Universities of Paris Diderot-Paris VII and Paris Descartes-Paris V. Courses of the second year are taught in English: Gene expression, Structural and comparative genomics
