  2. Israel Hit by Rockets From Lebanon • At least 3 rockets fired from Lebanon into northern Israel on Wednesday • Israel launched artillery shells into Lebanon • This might open second front, separate from the war with Gaza

  3. Significance of Rocket Attacks • No group has claimed responsibility • Lebanon’s government condemned the rocket fire • Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group is suspected by Israel of using allied radical groups to irritate Israel • In summer 2006 short but intense war between Israel and Hezbollah • Could become major problem for Israel since they are already fighting a war in the south (Gaza) with Hamas

  4. Obama’s Tax Plan • Obama wants an economic rescue plan that would cost about $800 billion • About $300 billion would come from tax cuts • Examples of tax cuts: • $500 cut for most workers • $1,000 for couples • These cuts might go directly into worker paychecks increasing them $10-$20 week • That alone would cost $140-$150 billion over 2 years • The rest of the rescue plan money would go on spending programs like highways, bridges, schools

  5. Obama’s Plan Faces Opposition • Obama's proposed tax cuts ran into opposition Thursday from senators in his own party who said they wouldn't do much to stimulate the economy or create jobs. • Senators from both parties agreed that Congress should do something to stimulate the economy. But Democratic senators of the Senate Finance Committee criticized business and individual tax cuts in Obama's stimulus plan. • Obama and Congress want a plan passed by mid-February since the economy is in such trouble

  6. Person of the Week: Leon Panetta • Former Congressmen • White House Chief of Staff for Bill Clinton • Obama nominated him to head CIA • Never worked directly in intelligence • Criticized CIA in past for harsh interrogation practices

  7. Political Cartoon Symbolism: Bush’s legacy is shown as a pile of manure which shows how bad he has been through out his terms of president. Bush’s term he has done things that are not the best for the country.
