Optimism & Well-Being • Less stress, depression, and loneliness than pessimists • More resistance to postpartum depression • Less distressed before and after surgery • Positively affects caregivers’ well-being • Predictor of good health in college students • Less likely to suffer a heart attack during bypass surgery • Linked to longer life spans

Hopeful People • High hope people set more goals in many areas of life • High hope people believe they control their own fate • Find other ways to their goals when things don’t work out • High hope people have better coping strategies • High hope people have a larger support network • More likely to use humor, prayer, or meditation to help • High hope people aren’t more intelligent, but more successful

  4. Common wishes/hopes • Health • Wealth • Happiness • Healthy/happy/safe/close family • More of the same • Good job • God • Housing • Peace

  5. Hope & Academic Success • Hope predicts attendance to class • Hope predicts credits earned • Hope predicts GPA • Hope predicts retention in college • Hope is a stronger predictor of college success than are high school GPA, SAT, and ACT scores • Hope is particularly important in the beginning of college
