  1. Group Longwave Radiation Allie Jones, Catrin Mills, Andy VanLoocke, Kirstin Gleicher

  2. Scheme Differences • RRTM • RRTMg (control)-a simplified version of RRTM • Approximates radiative transfer with fewer points • Like wider rectangles approximating an integral • CAM 3.0 • Fewer absorbing gasses and spectral bands • Emissivity and absorptivity updated every 12 hrs • Neglects dependence on T, WV, Ozone • Explains lack of diurnal cycle • Not an issue when clouds are present-dominant impact • calculated at every call of rad. phys

  3. U-Wind RRTM CAM RRTMG

  4. V-Wind CAM RRTM RRTMG

  5. W-Wind CAM RRTM RRTMG

  6. Temperature CAM RRTM RRTMG

  7. Temperature Difference Fields

  8. Relative Humidity CAM RRTM RRTMG

  9. RH Difference Fields

  10. Surface and TOA Longwave Radiation

  11. Surface Heat Fluxes

  12. TOA and Surface Shortwave Flux

  13. Ground Flux

  14. Conclusions • Little difference in RRTM and RRTMG • CAM shows major differences in RH at top and bottom of atmosphere. • Also shows major difference in TOA outgoing LW radiation
