  5. Students are motivated by… • clearly stated purpose and outcomes • clearly stated directions, parameters, and requirements • their own interests and assignments that have real life-application • meaningful assignments – not busy work • transparent assessment processes • do-able assignments

  6. Top Five Tips for Effective Assignment Design

  7. Tip 1 • Break down big projects into smaller tasks that can be monitored

  8. Tip 2 • Set up “research requirements” that define the types of sources they will need • HCC Library: Popular Versus Scholarly Sources • UMBC Library: Information Literacy

  9. Tip 3 • Teach step-by-step research strategies (specific to your field) • Don’t’ assume students know how to research

  10. Tip 4 • Provide guidelines for evaluating credibility and reliability of source • HCC Library: Information Literacy

  11. Tip 5 • Demonstrate HOW to incorporate sources into their project/writing (specific to your field, including citation/documentation expectations) • DO IT IN CLASS – SHOW! SHOW! SHOW! • PEE – Point, Example (Evidence), Explain • DIY – try the assignment yourself! • MODELS – lots of it!

Tips from participants • Group work works but need structure – group projects/essays • Presentations – teach HOW-TO present • Assignment should stretch the students’ understanding of course content • Easy to follow the directions – SIMPLIFY! • Share project ideas with other faculty • Show how to use Wikipedia – starting point – go to original source • Contextualize the assignment – how does it fit into the others? Overall course? Make connections

Assignment Workshop • Trade assignments with another person • What works well about this assignment? • If you were the student doing this assignment, what questions/difficulties might you have? • What needs improvement at motivational, overall, and practical level? Note: these are good questions to ask yourself as you design assignments! (and maybe ask your colleagues to evaluate your assignment prompts)
