  8. Communication • Graded papers will come home in the Monday Folder. We are using the homework divider for now. • A weekly newsletter will be emailed to you. You can also find the newsletter on the Bear Creek Third Grade website. • Progress reports will go home at 3 weeks for failing students and at 6 weeks for every student. • Report cards go home at the end of the nine week grading period.

  9. General Expectations • We encourage our students to do their best work. All work should be neat, complete, correct, and on time. • If a student has work that is considered late, unacceptable, or incomplete, he/she will complete the work in study hall. • Students are expected to follow directions given on any assignment whether stated orally or written.

  10. Daily Work Expectations • We expect students to be on task and work toward completion at all times. • An adequate amount of time will be allowed for the completion of an assignment. When the allotted time is up, papers will be turned in to the teacher. If a student is not finished with the assignment, he/she will have the opportunity to complete the assignment during study hall class held during recess. Unfinished work may occasionally be sent home for completion.

  11. Morning Routine • Students are to report to the gym between 7:15am and 7:35am. • Third grade teachers will escort students to the classroom at 7:35. • If you choose to walk your child to class, please say your goodbyes at the door in the hallway and avoid entering the classroom. It will be the teacher’s goal to give two positive traits of the writing, and two areas to give attention to within the writing.

  15. Spelling Expectations • Spelling strategies and rules will be covered in class. • Students will be a given a rule and a concept to study. Students will work at home on daily spelling assignments, but will not necessarily have a list to memorize for the week. These assignments will vary according to what we are studying in writing. The first nine weeks students will work on writing complete “juicy” sentences. A juicy sentence is a complete sentence with vivid details. • Please make sure that your child is studying the spelling pattern; it is the pattern that the child will be required to apply throughout the remainder of the school year. • A final test over the concept for the week will be given on Friday. • Students will be held accountable for words previously learned in all areas of the academic day.

  16. Language Arts Grade Grammar 30% Writing 50% Spelling 20%

  17. Reading Expectations • Students will be making the switch from learning to read to reading to learn. • In reading we will be focusing on reading fluency, reading stamina, and reading comprehension. • Reading Fluency is the rate at which a child reads. • Beginning of the year: 85-90 words per minute • Middle of the year: 100 wpm • End of year: 115 wpm • Building a child’s reading stamina helps to develop a life long reader that can sustain their reading for a prolonged time. This is developed through silent reading, shared reading, and teaching the reading strategies in instruction. • Reading comprehension is a constant focus in third grade and is developed through reading practice and implementing reading strategies taught.

  27. Homework • The purpose of homework is to give your child a chance to practice and review things learned at school or to prepare for future learning. • Students will have activities to choose from to complete their homework. Students will record the Spelling activity chosen, Math activity chosen, and the book they read, how long they read it, and one sentence about something interesting they read in the Communication Sprial. • Students are allowed to “work ahead” if needed to accommodate their schedule (soccer practice, dance class, etc).

Students with incomplete homework will sign the behavior book and complete the work in study hall. • It is our expectation that the student attempt to complete as much of the homework independently as possible. • Third grade students are expected to read 20 minutes every night. Parents are encouraged to read with their student as well as allow time for independent reading.

  30. Grading Policy • Students will be given a chance to redo daily assignments and quizzes below a 70%. • If corrected, the highest grade given will be a 70%, regardless of the corrected score. • Correcting or retaking unit tests will not be permitted. • The student will be given one week from the date the graded paper is returned to turn in the corrected assignment.

  32. Testing • MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment • Completed in the computer lab during school hours in September, January, and May • Covers Mathematics, Reading, and Language Usage • The results will allow teachers to use data to better instruct each child. • The tests will also include each student’s Lexile. A Lexile is a number that corresponds with the difficulty of the reading material. If a student is having trouble picking “just right” books from the library, parents can go to www.lexile.com to help the child choose an appropriate book.

  33. Testing (cont) • For questions regarding MAP Assessment, you can access the district website. • www.gcisd-k12.org • Departments and Programs • Assessment, Research, and Evaluation • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

  37. Behavior • Our philosophy: We believe all students can behave appropriately. • Every third grade teacher is utilizing “the card” system. If a child chooses not to follow a classroom rule, then he/she will be instructed to “pull a card”. 38. Behavior (cont) • If a student signs the book nine times the first nine weeks grading period, or six times in the following nine weeks grading periods, the student is not eligible for extra recess during our end of the nine weeks celebration. • Students will sign the book for incomplete homework or pulling two or more cards in a day. • Please check and sign your child’s Communication Folder daily.

  41. Rachel’s Challenge • We are doing Rachel’s Challenge again this year! • Rachel Scott was a victim of the Columbine High School shooting. After this tragedy, her family found a journal Rachel wrote stating that she wanted to start a chain reaction of kindness. • Bear Creek is taking this challenge! As students, teachers, and parents witness acts of kindness, they will write the kind act on a link. The links will be hooked together to form a chain. At the end of the year, all the chains for the whole school will be linked together to give a physical representation of all the acts of kindness seen at Bear Creek. • The counselor will visit each class once every three weeks to do a guidance lesson pertaining to Rachel’s Challenge.

  42. Around the World at Bear Creek • We will have our 5th annual Around the World at Bear Creek this year! • This is a great time for our students and teachers to celebrate the diversity at Bear Creek. • If you are interested in helping in any capacity (helping guide students, creating a presentation about your native country, helping others create a presentation, helping with set up/tear down) please fill out the sheet enclosed. • If you have any questions about this event, contact Jodi Lucas at jodi.lucas@gcisd.net

  43. Field Trip • We will take one field trip in the spring. • More information will be sent home about field trips as it becomes available.

  44. Class T-Shirts • More details regarding cost, design, and need of classroom T-shirt will be given at a later date. • Class T-shirts will be worn on the field trip, STAAR Test days, on Field Day, and Spirit days (Fridays).

  45. Book Orders • Book orders will be sent home quarterly in the Take Home Folder. • Orders can be placed online at www.scholastic.com/clubsordering • This year, for every online order you place, Scholastic will give you $5 book coupon and they will give the teacher a $3 coupon. • I will also accept paper orders with a check made out to “Scholastic.” • Cash is not accepted.

  49. Birthdays • For your child’s birthday, cupcakes, cookies, etc. must be given in the classroom, not in the cafeteria at lunch. The student will be able to pass out goodies at the end of the day to celebrate his/her birthday. • All handouts and fliers, including birthday invitations, must be approved by the principal and all students in the classroom must be included. The principal will make a decision regarding the approval or denial within two school days of having received the materials. Please abide by this new policy and get your materials approved before you attempt to pass something out to students. Only students, not adults, may dispense any materials to other students.
