  2. Pern is an imaginary planet which is threatened by the dangerous Red Star that rains damaging threadlike plant spores on Pern about every two-hundred years. The Weyr people have raised dragons to help them to destroy the Thread before it lands on their planet. Dragonriders are selected every hatching season by a dragon. The dragons choose a rider who will be their exclusive rider for life.

  3. Keevan (smallest dragonrider candidate-nervous he won’t be picked by a dragon due to his size. Mende (Keevan’s mom) K’last (Keevan’s dad) Lessa (Weyrwoman) Beterli (one of the older dragonrider candidates who hasn’t been able to impress a dragon for 8 hatching seasons) Heth (rare bronze dragon)

  4. = 40 = 72 – youngest candidates and other candidates that have been to several impression ceremonies.

  5. Keevan is hurt by Beterli after he shoved a shovel into Keevan’s chest. Keevan fell and broke his leg and hurt his head. Beterli is disqualified as a dragonrider. He tried to trick Keevan into thinking he was too young and too small to participate in the impression ceremony.

  6. Lessa tells Keevan that Beterli was tricking him. Keevan tells Lessa about what happened with Beterli.

  7. Despite his injuries, Keevan struggles to get to the impression ceremony. Since everyone is at the ceremony, no one is available to help him.

  8. Keevan becomes K’van after Heth, a rare bronze dragon, chose Keevan as his lifetime dragonrider. After Heth was hatched, he made telepathic communication with Keevan to let him know he chose him. K’van realizes that size doesn’t matter when a dragon impresses its dragonrider. He was selected for the person he is on the inside.
