Thompson, Director Instructional Technology Services • Jacquetta Morrison, Technology Educator Instructional Technology Services OUR MISSION Richland One will prepare every student to be a successful, contributing citizen in a global society by providing an effective and high-quality education

Are Colleges Preparing Our Students for the Future? • 45% of college students show no significant improvement in • Critical thinking • Complex reasoning • Writing • Assignments are not very rigorous • 1/2 did not take courses requiring 20 pages of writing • 1/3 did not take a single course requiring 40 pages of reading a week

  4. Today’s Students…. • Computers and rapid communication are the norm • GPS Satellite navigation systems have always been available • WWW has never stood for World Wide Wrestling • Gas stations have never fixed flats, but most serve cappuccino • Electronic tax returns have always been an option

Today’s Students…. • Avatars have nothing to do with Hindu deities • Time has always worked with Warner • The World Wide Web has been online since they were born • IBM has never made typewriters • Employees have always been able to do credit checks on employees • Caller ID has always been available on phones

  6. Today’s Students…. • 98.6 has always been confirmed in the ear • There have always been charter schools • Nelson Mandela has always been free • Being a latchkey kid has never been a big thing • Sammy Davis, Jr., Jim Henson and Freddy Krueger have always been dead

  8. What are the Implications? • Learning must engage students • Technology has to be seamless in both teaching and learning • Expectations for student productivity must be increased • Student work and assessments must change

  17. Topics for Man-on-the Street Interviews • You are a reporter for your college newspaper. The assignment editor has asked you to research students’ reactions to a recent national report which quotes a well-known climatologist who suggests that global warming is a fabrication of uninformed scientists.

Topics for Man-on-the Street Interviews • As a member of the news team for the local NBC Affiliate, you have a reputation for staying on top of the community’s reactions to news events on the local and national levels. Today you are asking customers in a popular restaurant their reactions to the unrest in Egypt and how they think it will impact our country and them personally.

  19. Topics for Man-on-the Street Interviews • You are host of a popular talk radio show here in the city. Due to the recent harsh winter weather, district schools have missed 10 days on instruction. The local legislative delegation is asking that half of the days be forgiven by the legislature. Early indications are that the legislature is in favor of the request but the State Superintendent of Education has stated publicly that he is opposed to eliminating any instructional days for students. You have asked listeners to call in with their reactions.
