  1. Genesis chapter 3 Q u e s t i o n Genesis chapter 3 thought by many to be the most important chapter in the Bible!

  2. HAD THE SERPENT EATEN OF THIS TREE? Gen.3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? ANSWER:Maybethe fruit of that tree had special drugs and eating may have made the “very good” serpent more subtle, … but this is an interpretation. • How can one be more subtle? • This is best answered with the question, -- which is the more naked, a naked 2 year old girl or a naked 20 year old girl? • The answer is obvious but it is subtle for neither is evil of themselves but both have great potential for evil. f

  3. JESUS’ builds on Gen. 3:1 to be wiSE, harmless & WITHOUT GUILE! • Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. • Luke 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. • We need to be wise but w/o guile, i.e.:

  4. Jesus didn’t use guile being wiser than his enemies. • Mt. 22:17 “Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?” • John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! • Jacob usedguilewith Isaac and Laban but there is a better way and that is to follow Jesus and make God’s word our meditation so that we too become wiser than our enemies • Psalm 119:97-99 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. [98] Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

  5. SO WHAT THEN WAS THE SERPENT’S MOTIVE? • Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: • The Woman was given two dimensions – flesh and spirit. These war against each other as seen in Rom.7:23,24 • Serpent has but one dimension – flesh, i.e.: • At puberty snakes have no consciousness of nakedness. • . There was no “war” going on in its members, …

  6. (WHAT WAS THE SERPENT’S MOTIVE?) • John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, (the Jews falsely accused Jesus) and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him(only one dimension with the serpent). When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. • Jesus is a type of the 2nd Adam. • The Jews are a type of the serpent who because of envy delivered Jesus to be put to death, (Mt. 27:18). • ANSWER: Since the motive in the type was envyperhaps envy is what caused the serpent to lie in Eden – i.e. envy of Adam and Eve who were given “dominion”, but since it had but one dimension there was no war in its members and it lied.

  7. COULD THE SERPENT HAVE BEEN AN AGENT OF the DEVIL? • There is no mention of the devil in Genesis or the serpent being a tool of the devil. • Gen. 3:14 “thou has done this …” • 2Co. 11:3 “the serpent beguiled Eve.” • Gen.3:13 The serpent didn’t blame the devil when Eve blamed it. • Gen.3:14 God punished the serpent.

  8. WHAT DID EVE ADD TO GOD’S COMMAND AND WHAT DID SHE TAKE AWAY FROM THE COMMAND? • Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. • Eve adds, “neither shall ye touch it” • “you will surely die” vs. “lest ye die” shows Eve takes away from how emphatic this command was. • Gen 2:16 “freely eat” of every tree vs. “eat of the fruit of the trees” -- Eve missed God’s goodness and generosity. • Exhortation: How careful we must be in the Word that we neither add or take away. • Rev. 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: [19] And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, …”

  9. WHERE TODAY DO WE SEE THIS SAME LIE? • Genesis 3:4-5 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: [5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. • In church! Most religions teach this lie in some form. The immortal soul is a common way, another is some form of reincarnation, others have a paradise, a happy hunting ground, a heaven, hell or purgatory. This lie takes many forms but we must not be deceived.God means what He says!

  10. but was the man deceived as the woman? • Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. • No, 1 Tim. 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. • What we learn from Adam’s sin is that we trust God, obey Him, love Him and put Him above all including the women! • From Eve we learn sin is seductiveand to run from it. • Gen.39:12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

  11. AT WHAT POINT DOES SIN TAKE PLACE? • Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food(sin @ this pt.?),and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she tookof the fruit(@ this pt.?)…and did eat(@ this pt.?), • James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his ownlust(desires, NKJV),and enticed. 15 Then when lust (desire) hathconceived <4815> it bringeth forth sin: … • 4815 sullambano {sool-lam-ban'-o} AV - take 8, conceive 5, help 2, catch 1. • When tempted in the wilderness Jesusnever yielded to his “desires” but countered them with the Word. Once we indulge our desires and premeditate -- sin takes place in our heart (mind). • Mt.5:28 … whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

  12. THIS WAS A DISASTROUS CHANGE! • Genesis 3:7-8 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. [8] And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. • Eyes now open to nakedness, shame and fear. • Hiding from God instead of the joy of fellowship. • A horrible disaster for all of creation, Rm.8:22. • From “very good” to the ugliness of disease and death.

  13. a cruel parallel -- drugs! • New sensations, feelings as if the mind had been expanded by a powerful drug but ever so quickly the euphoria is replaced with an overwhelming desire to run and hide from reality, from God! • In place of love, confidence and faith in God there is an urgent lust to satisfy, a huge, open, deep pit to have fallen into and a very high mountain to climb back up. • The path is down, down, down with almost no way back,… for once the eyes have been opened, meaning the brain path is etched, the craving of the flesh is always there!

  14. Question: how do we overcome flesh?

  15. How did jesus overcome f l e s h ? • Matthew 4:3-4 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. [4] But he answered and said, It is written(Deu. 8:3),Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. • EXAMPLE: Psa. 119:97-104

  16. INSIGHTS TO how jesus countered human nature. • Psalm 119:97-104 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. [98] Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies :( enemy #1 is our nature) for they are ever with me. [101] I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. [102] I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. • [103] How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!(Bible study gives a sense of real peace, accomplishment and great joy) [104] Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hateevery false way. (Jesus saw through this nature and this same mindset must be in us.)

  17. Philip. 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: [6] Who, being in the form of God(echoes Gen.1:26 “Let us make man in our image”),thought it not robbery to be equal with God:(RSV “did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped at – this echoes back to Eden!)[7] But made himself of no reputation,(When – during his 3.5 year ministry)and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men(his ministry was that of a common man):[8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.(“not my will by thine be done”. • This same mindset WE TOO must have to follow him for flesh is flesh and flesh must be crucified -- the foundations are all in Genesis!

  18. f o u r q u e s t I o n s ! • Genesis 3:9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, (1)Where art thou? [11]And he said, (2)Who told thee that thou wast naked?(3)Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? [13] And the Lord God said unto the woman, (4)What is this that thou hast done? • Leading question really work and we do well to follow this procedure in every day life. • Affidavits in our legal system make great use of leading questions.

  19. (Excuses don’t work well!) • Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. [13] And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. • Excuses especially don’t work with God, for they defeat what God is trying to do, namely: confession, forgiveness and reconciliation.

  20. HOW RESPONSIBLE ARE CREATURES? • Genesis 3:14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thouhast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: • Scripture shows animals facing consequences…the serpent to lick the dust and an ox to being stoned. • Exodus 21:28 If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, … • Micah 7:17 They shall lick the dust like a serpent, … • The serpent does not answer for himself because he was not disobedient to any commands. • He is cursed to crawling on his belly where he will not be able to influence man to sin again, just as the ox is stoned so that he no longer is a danger to man.

  21. Why did god put this enmity between both? • Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity (hatred) between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. • James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. • If Good and Evil hate each other, it makes a separation between the two, for, because of human nature, the bad usually corrupts the good. (rotten apple principle) • This barrier is important we see!

  22. Most teens don’t realize why it is true that in order to have the right friends, we must be willing to have the right enemies. God warns “ … whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” James 4:4 CLICK What happens when a wrong friendship is continued?Answer: We lose god, godly friends & INTERESTS: Wrong close friends His close friend thinks he is too spiritual. The scriptural example of Jehoshaphat is an excellent example of what can happen in trying to help the ungodly, 2Chr.19:2; 22:9-10.

  23. does our western culture run counter to god’s edict for the woman? • Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire {shall be} to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. • Her desire (allegiance) is to her husband, and as her head he is given dominion over her. • Yes, our culture devalues her role as mother as well as not considering her husband as her head and all too often we have this and not this.

  24. WHY DOES GOD SAY THE GROUND WAS CURSED FOR ADAM’S SAKE? • Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; [18] Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; • Having too much time on one’s hands makes one especially vulnerable to sin. (As happened in Sodom) • The ground being cursed helps fill time with hard work tilling, weeding, and reaping, and makes one more dependent on God for His help.

  25. WHY AGAIN IS THE PRINCIPLE OF AUTHORITYE M P H A S I Z E D ? • Genesis 3:19-20 In the sweatof thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. [20] And Adam called his wife's name Eve (living); because she was the mother of all living. • WORK is NOT an inheritance of the FALL but sweat sure is! • Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. • Adam names Eve to show even after the Fall, Adam remains Eve’s head. • Answer: In the end it is God’s authority that is being challenged.

  26. WHAT ARE SOME BIBLE PRINCIPLES implied by THis COVERING for SIN? • Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. • Man can’t cover his own sin. • Heb. 9:25 … the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; (NRSV) • It is the blood(Bible shorthand for Jesus’ life /death work)which destroyed the spell of sin’s power,(sin = death)that makes atonement. • Heb. 9:22 …and without shedding of blood is no remission. • Belief in Jesus’ life accomplishment (his blood) purges our conscience, justifies (by faith) and frees us from sin’s power to cause eternal death. • (NSRV)Acts 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. .

  27. WOULD EATING OF THE TREE OF LIFE haveMADE THEM live forever? • Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life<2416>, and eat, and live for ever <5769>: • 2416 chay {khah'-ee} AV - live 197, life 144, beast 76, alive 31, creature 15, running 7, living thing 6, raw 6, misc 19; 501 • 5769 `owlam AV - ever 272, everlasting 63, old 22, perpetual 22, evermore 15,never 13, time 6, ancient 5, world 4, always 3, alway 2, long 2,more 2, never + 0408 2, misc 6; 439 • Deut. 32:7 Remember the days of old <5769>, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. • ANSWER:Yes, “owlam” can mean just “old” but here in v.22 “owlam” means “for ever” since this is one of the reasons why they were driven from the garden, so that they would not live for ever.

  28. DID ADAM LEAVE THE GARDEN RELUCTANTLY? • Gen. 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent <7971> him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. [24] So he drove <1644> out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. • 7971 shalach; v AV - send 566, go 73, (send, put,...) forth 54, send away 48, lay 14,send out 12, misc. 85. • 1644 garash; v AV - drive out 20, cast out 8, thrust out 6, drive away 2, put away 2, divorced 2, misc. 7; 47 • ANSWER: YES, since “garash” is used. • Being driven out shows just how far man had fallen and a telling way to end Genesis chapter 3!
