  3. Course Objectives & Procedures • Purpose: to Communicate effectively: both verbally and written in a persuasive manner • To Complete the Research Paper as required for graduation • What ‘s the angle? Evidence per paragraph?

Tuesday Timeline • Argument and Research • All days involve reading, listening, note taking & writing responses • Mondays: Lecture, teacher guided instruction, exploring topics • Tuesdays- Thursday: Brief teacher instruction, research, notecards • Fridays: Project sharing, silent reading, note card writing, discussions • Timeline of Important Dates • Week One March 12~This I believe, types of summarization, facts /opinions, arguable topics, videos and articles • Week Two March 19~ Bias, ethics , ethos, pathos & logos ; start propaganda project, opinions, beliefs, rhetoric,: MLA basics of note and source cards, terms & vocabulary, • Week Three March 26~Logical fallacies, define and explore thesis statements, class time for Propaganda projects due Wednesday & Thursday Spring Break Week ~ clarify thesis statements • Week Four April 9~ thesis statements due Monday, syllogism, types of reasoning • 2o Note cards due April 13; & Friday Test on material & notes from weeks 1-4 • Week Five April 16~ (15 more 35) note cards due Wednesday Opening paragraph due Friday April 20th, MLA works cited page( how’s it done?) • Week Six April 23~ 15 more to 50) Skeletal Outline with 7 strong sources due Friday • Week Seven April 30~ Return outlines Mon & Tues conferencing, focus MLA,Rough Draft due May 7 • Week Eight May 7~ Collect rough drafts • Week Nine May 14~ Begin returning rough drafts, Debate Basics, Friday Test • Week Ten May 21~ Improve research papers & conference about writing all week: Final Papers due papers due Friday 25 & Monday 29 • Week Eleven May 29~ Back to debate and formal discussion • Week Twelve June 4 Exam Week Yes a test too

  9. Summarizing • Paraphrasing: • Paraphrasing is simply restating a passage in your own words. It states fully and clearly the meaning of a complex piece of writing. Because it includes your interpretation of the work, paraphrasing is at least the same length as the original, more often than not it is longer. • Synopsis: • A synopsis is a brief snapshot capturing the essence of, or in other words the general view of, the original text, book, play, or communication.

Read and take notes on the state article. Today highlight One –three sentences and paraphrase. Due end of class. • 3. According to the editorial team of Holt Paperbacks NPR’s This I Believe series , “Offers a simple, if difficult invitation: Write a few hundred words expressing the core principles that guide your life-your personal credo.” This is your challenge due Friday.
