What is the cold war? • It is a war that began because of the USA and the USSR (also known as the Soviet Union). • The Cold war is called “Cold” because there was never any actual armed contact between these countries. • Their difference in opinion however did spark physical battles within other countries. • The era lasted from 1945-1990.

  3. Countries involved • Fear and the spread of Communism caused a rift in various countries such as Japan, Korea, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. • During both the Korean War and the Vietnam War it was a battle between two sides within the countries. The north side in both wars supported Communism and the south side were against it. • Japan and Vietnam allied the USA and rebelled against the thought of Communism.

Soviet verses United States The Soviet Union Leader Josef Stalin United States Ambassador George Kennan In 1947, he stated that because of USSR’s desire to destroy all means of capitalism and expand Communism that the USA are now against them. In 1946, he claimed that future wars with western Europe are unavoidable as long as they continue to support capitalism.

What happened? • In 1954 “under God” was added to the pledge of allegiance as a sign of resistance to Communism in 1954. • The USSR and their supported countries seized all trade with western Europe nations. • The Berlin wall was built to divide Eastern and Western Europe. It became the symbol of the cold war. • The Soviet Union supported Eastern Europe and the United States supported Western Europe.

  7. The Results • The Soviet Union began to crumble economically during Mikhail Gorbachev’s rule. • The fall of the Berlin wall in 1991 defined the end of the Cold War. • The two separated German nations were able to unite and overthrow the Soviet Union.
