BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction EnvironmentLearning outcome 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.1 and 2.2 Safe manual handling • There will always be a need to lift and carry materials and objects around a workplace • Not lifting and carrying correctly can cause injury, e.g.: • spinal injury • muscle strain • cuts and abrasions • broken bones • It can also result in damage to: • materials and equipment • the work area • customer’s property

BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environmentlearning outcome 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.3 Regulations • Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR), 2004 • Avoid hazardous manual handling operations where possible • Carry out a risk assessment • Employees must take care of: • take care of their own health and safety • take care of the health and safety of others who may be affected by their actions • tell their employer if they are going to carry out hazardous lifting • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), 1998 • Covers equipment used for lifting or lowering loads • Equipment should be: • suitable for its intended use • positioned to avoid accidents • marked with necessary information • used by competent people • checked before use

Objects can be heavier than they look. Ask someone to help you, the lift might need one or more people, or lifting equipment. Step 2 Clear your path to where the object is to be moved, and make sure there is enough space to put it down. Adopt a secure stance, with legs shoulder width apart on either side of the object.

BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environmentlearning outcome 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.5 Protecting yourself (1) • Follow operating instructions for lifting equipment • Follow safety advice when using lifting equipment • Suitable PPE should be worn at all times • protective footwear • protective gloves • hard hat • ear defenders • Hi-vis jacket or waistcoat • respirator • protective glasses or goggles

BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environmentlearning outcome 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.7 Reporting a problem • You must not simply ignore a health and safety problem • If there is a health and safety related problem: • speak to the employer or person in control and try to sort out the issue • contact your work/safety representative, or your trade union safety representative • report the problem to the HSE • If an accident takes place, the requirements of the RIDDOR Regulations must be followed – see Unit 1 slides
