British Olympic success will drive tourism to the London 2012 games(19 August 2008 11:38) • The British team’s outstanding performance in Beijing will drive domestic tourism to the London 2012 Games, Visit London claimed today. • Visit London chief executive James Bidwell said: “Team GB has made us all proud over the last few days. “These results will only energise the British public ahead of our own London Games in 2012. The majority of visitors to London 2012 will be domestic visitors and no doubt great sporting expectations and results will help us deliver the 2012 tourism legacy.”

How UK tourism/hospitality programs working together • Higher Education Academy- HSLT • HLST and the Olympic Games London’s hosting of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 provides an opportunity to raise the profile of the subjects in our Network.  • Our courses provide the professional skills, knowledge and understanding which are essential for success in such a multifaceted and complex event. Below are examples of how our subject areas will contribute to the Olympics:  • Sciences that underpin the preparation of elite athletes for world class performance; • the coaching and sports management capacity required to support growing participation in sport; • the provision of facilities and opportunities for active leisure; • understanding the needs of tourists  • travel and tourism management skills essential for the provision of successful events; • high quality hospitality facilities and services; • our close working relationships with industry and employers and • our well established multicultural awareness and international outlook. • We can therefore rightly claim to be the subjects for the Olympics! • Latest news

  10. Research project 2008/9 Project objectives To identify and maximize the learning opportunities for students that are presented by the 2010 winter and 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games. To co-ordinate an on-line resource base to support the teaching and learning of the impacts of the Olympics through a range of academic subject areas in Tourism and Hospitality, and support programme development of a new Event Management degree. To explore and identify how through the Olympics, sustainable development can be further weaved into teaching and learning strategies. To facilitate the exchange of material between UH academics and Canadian academics in the researching and teaching of subjects related to future Olympics

What the papers say ? • A report by Oxford Economics predicted that there would be 908,000 visitors to London during the 2012 Games: 586,000 domestic and 322,000 from overseas. • The Government has estimated that the tourism legacy of the 2012 Olympics will be £2.1b, but industry bodies have warned that the recent 18% cut in funding for VisitBritain and the lack of a coherent tourism strategy mean this is not guaranteed.

  16. Podium • 'Podium' is the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games. The Unit has a nationwide remit and has two major aims; To communicate both within the sector and with outside agencies about the potential for Universities and Colleges to support the successful staging and delivery of the 2012 Games. To coordinate the development of activity within the sector that maximises the benefits of hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in this country, contributing to the building of a sustainable and wide reaching legacy.
