What are Noncompetitive Inhibitors? • A substance that interacts with the enzyme but not at the active site. • They do not directly compete with the substrate to bind at the active site. • Obstructs enzymatic reactions by binding to another part of the enzyme. • This alters the shape of the enzyme as well as the active site.

  3. Nifedipine used to treat high blood pressure and to control angina (chest pain).

  4. Example: • Silver is poisonous. Silver ions react with -SH groups in the side groups of cysteine residues in the protein chain:There isn't enough electronegativity difference between silver and sulphur for a full ionic bond and so the bond can be considered as covalent.If the cysteine residue is somewhere on the protein chain which affects the way it folds into its tertiary structure, then altering this group could have an effect on the shape of the active site, and so stop the enzyme from working.
