Geography • Rome began as a settlement near the center of what is today Italy. • It was built on a series of hills along the Tiber River. • Climate – favorable climate helped it grow. • Cool rainy winters created productive farmland • Nearby Apennines Mountain range protected it from harsh weather and easy foreign invasion. • Tiber river enabled trade through Italy and Mediterranean Sea.
