History • A charming small museum in a 122 years old building in the first Jewish street in NeveZedek then part of Jaffa. • Known as the Writers’ House: Between 1907 and 1914 the house was the center of Jewish intellectuals, even before the City of Tel Aviv was established. • From 1998 the building became the home of Nahum Gutman’s Museum: Israel’s most popular artist ever.

The Pergament Wing • In September of 2009 a new wing was opened doubling the size of the museum to 1600sq.mt. • The museum was reorganized and exhibition program upgraded • The transformation was recognized by the public: private support is over 35% of our income and public support rose to a third from 22% • The artist family donated some 8000 illustration and drawings to the museum

  5. Why Gutman? Gutman described the Israeli soul while it was being formed with optimism, humor and the love of humanity. Gutman – the ultimate Tel Aviv artist: The Mugrabi Sq. scene from the City Hall Fountain: The coffee shops, the Jewish builders, the national poet, Bialik with the kindergarten kids, Alenbi st. by the beach and the Professor who sold hot dogs. The entire city in one painting!

Gutman lives • DaromDarom: the changes in the Gutman urban enviroment over 80 years: a social and urban analysis • The travel series : Four shows ending with Zulu in 9/2009 –the opening show of the new wing –focusing on the plight of refugees and other social and artistic issues • Illustration of the articles of the Bill of Rights by Artists for Amnesty

  12. Beyond Gutman Cont. • Jaffa by Bokobza: Looking at old Jaffa residents with present day eyes and their ordeals thruout the years. • RaadHalil: One of the first photographers in the Holy Land Documenting the land. But what does his documentary work mean in terms of who is a native?

  13. 2012 shows • Katmor and Third Eye: a fascinating period in the cultural development of Tel- Aviv Jaffa thru the works of Israel’s first true interdisciplinary artist • OraEitan: a retrospective of Israel’s foremost illustrator winner of two Anderson prizes. • An original exhibit designen especially for interactive parents children visits • Coming up in 2013 Mixed Cities in Israel: a long standing issue in Israeli life

  14. Education is an Art with us • We visit kindergartens and schools as far as Mitzpe Ramon and Yerucham in the south and Tuba Zangria Bedouin villages in the North. • We write and publish original education booklets which are used all over the country.

The Education Continues… • Hundreds of teachers attended our seminars • Tens of Art kindergartens visited the museum • A special summer camp for Arab and Jewish children from low income population from Jaffa • An innovative second traveling exhibition to accompany an original play about Gutman by the National Children and Youth Theater (see next slide)
