When it is celebrated? • It is celebrated on 30th Januarys and the first galley was introduced and burnt in 1889. The first torch celebration on Up HellyAa Fire festival took placed in 1881. The first yule took place in 1886.
What is the purpose? • According to John Jamieson’s Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language (1818), up is used in the sense of something being at an end, and derives from the Old Norse.
