What was Uncle Tom? • 1. Book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. • 2. She was well educated and highly religious. • 3. Published in 1852 in book form. • 4. It speaks of the story of middle-aged slave, named Uncle Tom and his family. Their brutal lives of slaves and their fight for freedom. • 5. The book was best selling next to the Bible.
Why was it written? • 1. The book was written to show the ugliest and cruelest parts of slavery • 2. The book was written from an anti-slavery view • 3. It also showed how Christian love could overcome slavery of human beings • 4. This book became the foundation in starting the Civil War between the North and South.
Relation to Slavery • 1. The book places fictional characters in real situations • 2. For Example: Whether slavery was practiced by cruel or benevolent masters slavery was still a miserable circumstance for Southern blacks, testing their courage and faith. • 3. Uncle Tom lived under evil slaveholders and as a result his faith began to weaken. He does not compromise his values by helping runaway slaves • Uncle Tom’s Cabin focuses on new renewal religious faith.
Effect on Slavery • 1. The book received praised from abolitionist • 2. It was also shunned by slavery supporters • 3. Critics stated that her descriptions were inaccurate • 4. Stowe published a follow up to the book called A Key to Uncle Tom Cabin • This cites real life stories and gives a more aggressive approach to Southern Slavery than the book itself
