  1. The Book of Daniel, Chapter 7: Four Beasts & the Ancient of Days

  2. Apocalyptic Literature • Daniel, chapters 7 – 12 contains Daniel’s visions of the future. This type of writing is known as apocalyptic literature. • “Apocalyptic” is a Greek word meaning “unveiling.” • This kind of literature unveils events that will take place at the end of time (not the world)! • It is highly symbolic and full of bizarre imagery.

  3. Main Features ofApocalyptic Literature • It divides the universe into good and evil. • It focuses on the future and presents a scenario of final events. • It is full of visions and symbols that are used to express deep and mysterious things. • It pictures a time of difficult and strife for God’s people followed by a great triumph for God and his people. • It comforts & encourages God’s people with the vision of God’s ultimate triumph over evil.

  4. Interpreting Daniel, Chapter 7: The Four Beasts • Notice the similarities between Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in chapter 2 and Daniel’s dream here in chapter 7… • “Gold head” = “Lion” = Babylonian Empire • “Silver chest/arms” = “Bear” = Persian Empire • “Bronze belly/thighs” = “Leopard” = Greeks • “Iron legs & feet of clay” = “Terrifying Beast” = Roman Empire

  5. “The Ancient of Days”“One Like the Son of Man” • The Ancient of Days = the Lord God • The Ancient of Days destroys the beast who is threatening to destroy God’s people. • The Ancient of Days is pictured as a judge. • “One like the Son of Man”…read Revelation 1:12 – 13, 17 – 18. • Daniel (7:13 -14) and John are referring to the same person—Jesus Christ whose death and resurrection saved us. God gave him all power & authority. An everlasting kingdom is promised…

  6. “The Last Kingdom”aka “The Terrifying Beast” • The last kingdom (“Big Mouth”) is more than just political, this beast speaks against God and wears out the believers in God. • Notice that God’s judgment here is presented as more than an event, it is an ongoing process. • Notice also that the last kingdom declines and is eventually destroyed while the kingdom ruled by God expands and is permanent.
