Role of Training Goal: Provide flexible, functional and evolving program for advanced science training aimed at supporting NWS operations and NWS Training Requirements of Vision 2005 Strategic Plan Training done through Integrated Sensor Training Professional Development Series and the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) Programs

  4. What is VISITview?(VISIT - Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training) Platform independent distance learning program that allows multiple users to view the same series of images containing graphics and text with several user features

  5. Distance Education – VISITview Teletraining Tool Specific Goals: • Extend teletraining capabilities to emulate AWIPS functions • Compliment other training aids (Web, etc) • Evolve as additional needs are identified

  6. How does VISITview work? • Client/server model • Instructor, student and listener modes • Types: • Web-based using a browser • lessons / training • collaborations using real-time data • Pre-loaded files but commanded remotely • Stand-alone lessons

  7. Full animation control, including: Pause-on-last Toggle frames Fade images Loop or rock Portals/viewports Multi-panel Unlimited zoom Transparency with GIF or JPEG Line and text screen annotation Pop-up help Chat Tear-off controls Colorize / enhance VISITview Client Functionality

  8. VISIT (Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training) –Teletraining Metrics (April 1999 - March 2001) - 245 sessions conducted - 1165 offices trained - Over 2800 students (Sept 2000 – March 2001) - Over 4000 certificates issued - More than 1100 evaluations received

  9. Role of Training Bottom Line  - You can reach a large audience across very large distances - Offices trained from Puerto Rico to Alaska and Guam - WMO Workshops and Meetings – Nanjing, China; San Jose, Costa Rica; Darmstadt, Germany

Lessons Learned - GOES-8+ • Get users involved early (RAMSDIS, CD and Web-based training, Web sites, teletraining) • Assessment with operational users - Lots of useful feedback • User feedback can make changes – RSO teletraining session led to improved call-up process and increased utilization • Issue – Delay in getting sounder products to forecasters via AWIPS

  11. Role of Training Is it too early for training on GOES Next? Who needs training? Everyone – Managers, researchers to field forecasters

Issues for GOES Next Generation Rapid Technology TransferNeeds Training * Involve Decision Makers early * Use Teletraining and Telebriefing * NWS Science & Technology Infusion Plan * Get new products to operational users fast – Use Risk Reduction and Assessment Programs (MODIS, METEOSAT Second Generation,…) * Virtual Laboratory for Satellite Meteorology

  13. WMO Virtual Laboratory for Satellite Meteorology WMO VL is a global network of specialized training centres created to meet user needs for increased skills, knowledge in using satellite data. Support WMO Strategy to Improve Satellite System Utilization by providing access to training and educational material, software and expertise on how to the utilize data, and case study and near real-time data.
