  2. Here is the plan… Students will understand the term LDC. Students will make connections between poor economic conditions and poor social development. Students will analyze data to support opinions on economic and social development throughout the world.

  3. Read Women in the Work Force from page #43 in textbook. Discuss in small groups: Are women treated equally around the world? How about in the USA? Look at Table 1.3 from page #42 in your textbook. In what countries do women seem to have the lowest status?

Rising Tide… • Global economic convergencestates that the world’s poorer countries will gradually catch up with the more advanced nations. • Countries economies have become more interconnected. • It is also assumed that with increased economic prosperity an increase in social conditions will follow.

  6. Falling Flat? • In recent years, wealth disparity within many nations has risen. • In recent years, wealth disparity between many nations has risen.

  8. Core-Periphery Model • The core-periphery modelstates that the economic “core” is located in the Northern hemisphere and the economic “periphery” is located in the Southern hemisphere. • Look at Figure1.46 AND Table 1.2 from page #40

  9. Developing Countries • Also referred to as LDC’s or 3rd World countries. • Usually characterized by low economic development, high birth rates, poor social conditions. • Most parts of Sub Saharan Africa and Haiti are good examples of LDC’s.

  12. Sustainable Development • Trying to balance short term economic growth with long term environmental and social consequences. • Should the Amazon Rain Forest be harvested? OR should it be preserved? Who gets to decide?

  13. Stages • Proponents of Globalization would argue that this process takes time and that many Developing Nations are simply mirroring our own history of economic and social development.
