  2. Materials you will need: Prentice Hall Literature Book (blue and black) Pencil Notebook paper (journal)

  3. A legend is a traditional story about the past believed to be based on real events or people. Most legends include these elements: A human who is larger than life Fantastic elements Roots or basis in historical facts Events that reflect the culture that created the story

  4. Quickwrite: Think about family stories or fairy tales you were told as a child. In a few sentences, identify which stories were your favorites and why.

  5. Popocatepetl and Ixtlaccihuatl is a Mexican legend that has been passed down from one generation to the next. It explains the origin of two volcanoes near present-day Mexico City.

  6. Now turn to page 857 in your literature book and begin reading Popocatepetl and Ixtlaccihuatl. Each member of your group must read part of the story.

  7. Thinking about the text…Complete the following questions. You can work with your group, but each member must have his or her own responses to the questions. Why are Ixtla and Popo unable to marry? What qualities make the two well-matched? Why does Popo refuse to become emperor and rule in Tenochtitlan? Based on this legend, what traits do you think the Aztecs admired? What lesson does the story suggest? Can this lesson be applied to modern times? Explain.

  8. Literary Analysis… Identify two facts in this story. How do you know that they are facts? Which events in this legend might have been based on historical events? What details show Popo to be a larger-than-life hero?

  9. Extended Writing… Write a description of the character of Ixtla. Using the legend for reference, include details about her appearance, emotional qualities, and actions. List sensory words that will make your details interesting to readers.
